STAR—WEDNESDAY, DEC. 19, 1917. PAGE 8 IRPHEUM THEATRE Third and Madison. Eugene Levy, Mgr. New Show Wed. “SHIRLEY KAYE”’ Beautiful Actress, Clara Kimball Young, Liberty, ‘Thursday eee Starring That at the THE MEAT SITUATION IN SEATTLE A STATEMENT TO THE PUBLIC FROM THE MASTER BUTCHERS Notwithstanding that our former employes, composed of members of Butchers’ Upion, Local 81, refused to handle United States Government meats, flecessitating the employment on our part_ of new help, we wish to impress upon our patrons the fact that we ate serving them and will con- tinue to serve them with only such meats as they have in times past been accustomed to pur- chasing. AT, WHAT PRICE WOULD YOU SELL YOUR SILENCE? SEE We will not burden the public With another recital of the details of the situation forced upon us by our former employes, but for the information of those who did not read our original state- ment, made through the public press, we wish to say that by a written agreement with our old employes, entered into last June, to run for one year, wages, hours and working conditions were harmoniously adjusted. The agreement left us the right to purchase our meat vag ah from the pack. ing houses of Seattle and Eastern Branch houses, the only source from which U. S. Government inspected meats (the only kind we will handle) can be obtained. Because of some local disagreement between the packers from whom we obtain our Govern- ment inspected supply, and their employes, resulting in a strike, our employes, in sympathy with the strikers, broke their agreement with us by refusing to handle packing house products, from packing houses declared unfair. As all packing houses handling Government inspected meats had been declared unfair by the unions, we were left in the position of closing our shops or getting new employes. We naturally took the latter course. Our patrons—the public—in response to a previous newspaper statement made by us, have been extremely considerate and we wish to assure them that we appreciate it. Our service is fast getting back to normal; our new employes are adjusting themSelves to the public’s expectatiogs, and U. S. Government inspected meat supply is in every way equal to the demand. our Sellers” The Christmas rush will of course be heavy and we would ask our Where Love Triumphs Over Trickery Lina Cavalieri is not only a/| | LANRETY ay By Pe pe sr ° Py : bd = | eauty.
