Across the sea, our boys have gone into the first-line trenches to give their lives, if need be, in the world struggle for human liberty. Happily today, we of Seattle, as indeed the whole United States, can say that they are not going “ever the top” in vain. For we, too, in our own way, have $57 over the top.” Seattle has gone ¥000,000 above its $13,000,000 quota of the Liberty Loan. The state has ex- ok —eoemeens cemecesod ceeded its allotted portion by many more millions. Seattle and the state have made good in true Northwest style. Right along we knew, in our hearts, that the city, state and country would make good. And, in spite of all the mouthings and back-thrusts of a crafty and in- sidious minority, we shall continue to measure up to all tests. No one who watched the Seattle Seemann nt amrasobai Malate ‘LETS PIN KAISER TO THE WALL aati css throngs smash the Teutonic line Satur- day, in the closing moments of the Lib- erty Loan drive; no one who watched them break thru for a clean-cut win- ning touchdown, can doubt it. They kept going and rolled up a mighty score against the kaiser. AND THEY ARE NOT THRU. This week they are going thru the haiser’s line again. For it is “Food Pledge Week,” when loyal Americans will pledge their word of honor to can- serve as much food as possible. We have driven the enemy to the wall in the Liberty Loan battle. We must now pin him there in the food con- servation battle. There can be no let up in the concen- trated drive against the world’s most criminal slugger, Wilhelm of Germany. GREENE says Seattle is a vice-ridden city. He says def- initely that he has not only evidence as to the amount of vice, but infers that he has evidence that it is pro- tected by officials high in authority. Seattle and Seattle’s officials must look at this vice situation from a dif- ferent angle than ever before. They must look at it from Gen. Greene’s standpoint. It is the policy of the national gov- ernment to keep its soldiers clean, to keep them healthy, and to make each man an effective fighting unit. If vice 4 defeats this purpose, then the general 4 in command is just as much guilty as if he permitted his men to be badly trained, or as if he allowed some con- tageous disease or unsanittary condi- tion to spread in the cantonment. The Star made an investigation at Camp Lewis about 10 days ago. At that time 1,400 soldiers out of./] the 35,000 at Camp Lewis were in the } base hospital as the result of what we will call vice diseases. It is reasonable to suppose that this number of men are incapacitated by these same dis- eases in each of the various army camps. There are approximately 30 times as many soldiers in the United States army today as the Camp Lewis unit. Therefore, if this same percentage of diseased men holds in all of the camps, then today the government h more than 40,000 of its soldiers sick in hospitals as the result of vice. In other words, the government is maintaining unit as big as the Camp Lewis in hospitals } ult of this one thing j The loss is alling in dollars. It runs into millions d ie most serious loss is the fact } that this many soldiers, instead of being trained and made efficient fering from disease and 4 wasting their time spitals If th imber 0 idiers, or, if half this num- ber of soldiers, were in the hospitals because of typhoid, or because of any other single cause, the i vhole nation would be aroused and would demand of the military authorities speedy action to bring | about instant reform. This is the viewpoint that Gen. Greene, in command of the 40,000 soldiers at Camp Lewis, { takes. The nation, thru the administrattion, de- if mands that n. Greene perfect an effective fight- \ ing organ m out of his 40,000 men. If he ) »ws vice conditions in Seattle, or anywhere else, i to defeat that purpose, then he is failing the na- tion at the most critical point of its career. Gen. Greene will not fail, and there is no rea- son why Scattle cannot | nade clean enough to make it safe for Gen. Greene's soldiers to visit here. It’s Seattle’s move. The question involved is not a moral or is not a political one. It is strictly milittary, a in times of war, everything must be made to con- form to the military requirements. it is Seattle’s move.
