The average day for that average pay is ten hours and twelve minutes. In addition to this wage EVERY trainman is furnished FREE transportation for himself and EACH member of his FAMILY. More than half of the trainmen make MORE than $100 per month. The guaranteed wage to every trainman is $65 a month and free transportation, which he makes even if he doesn’t take out a car. Hl THESE FIGURES ARE TAKEN FROM THE PAY- ROLL of July 1 to 15, 1917. A platform man qualifies to draw this wage in one week’s training. Skilled trades require from three to seven years’ apprenticeship, and then the mechanic takes his chance on steady employment. An accountant must go through a business college, and he then starts service at from $50 to $60 a month— if he can get a position. A trainman has steady employment. The size of his pay check is usually a matter of his own industry.
