STAR—TUESDAY, FEB. 13, 1917. PAGE 6 HE CAVE MAN enn Made Her Own Clothes The Cave Woman's method of procur ing clothes was crude and laborious; she gathered grass and leaves which she wove together in such a way that they partially protected her body in the summer, while in the winter skins of animals were used. No pecial pattern or style prevailed in those days, anything to keep warm in winter, and during the summer the lightest and scantiest garments were used here is a startling contrast between this earliest method the cave woman used in procuring clothes and the modern way of- tered by the Pacific Outfitting Company, Seattle’s Popular Credit House In our establishment, at Third and Uni- versity, we have on display the véry latest creations in Ladies’ Wearing Apparel—in fact, one of the most complete lines in Seattle can be seen here. (Union Label! in Every Garment) HE GOT HIS TIME FROM THE SETTING SUN Among primitive peoples time was counted in vague terms, borrowed from meteorology and religion. Dawn, the hour of sacrifice, noon, sunset, etc. Egypt gave us the twelve- hour day and twelve-hour night, which the Greeks adopted and made them divinities. The Romans received the hours from the Greeks, but militarized them; they divided day and night into twice four parts of three hours each, corresponding to the watches of their sentinels. The modern way to always have the cor- rect time, is now made easy. Take one dol- lar down to Gus Cohn and select for yourself a Waltham, Elgin, Illinois, Hamilton or any other high grade standard-make watch, that can be regulated to the fraction of a second. Wear this watch, which has an iron-clad guarantee, and never be without the correct time. Bring Gus one dollar every week un- til you have paid for your watch. STREET Come in and inquire about our easy payment plan. The Cave Man Walked When the Cave Man journeyed, it was on foot, and three miles per hour was his best speed; not because he liked walking, but he had no other means of travel. Not even a road to walk on had he, but merely the animal paths, which often led in no particular direction. These paths always fol- lowed the lines of least resistance, making long detours necessary, although the point to be reached may have been comparatively close to home. All transportation problems were solved by the Ford Automobile, which enables you to reach your destination in safety and with dis- patch. Uphill or downhill is all the same to the traveler who avails himself of the many advan- tages offered by the Ford Car and the Ford Service. HOW HE LIVED HOW HIS DESCE The Cave Man The cave man was a funn cu ] For he was not content § To lead a life of idleness, He was a funny “Gent.” It made him sore to eat raw food, he loathed his matted hair; . And, oh! those long, da nights he spent in his un lighted lair. A bed upon the ground had he, his clothes were madé of skins. And how the winds a winter blew on his uf protected shins. Nay, he was not conte! with life, but said there’d be a change, And what he started doing made the neighbors think him strange. He built a door upon his cave; he made a couch of wood. Said he, “I’m only stag now, wait till | c@aags ing good!” And so young “Bear Skin" worked away with vigo and with vim; i It seemed there was n6 way at all of ever stop- ping him. His neighbors soon found_ out why he kept burst- ing into song, And never had a “grouchy” day, but went right on along. For when they went tot visit him a novel sight they saw— Young “Bear Skin” slep' upon a bed, and nop longer ate things Taw, And then at last they alg woke up, and followed§, where he led, | And made a few improve-§ 4, ments, too—or so. it has} been said. si And so they just “a vanced” along, Nor drifted with the tide; t! i For, with all their changed Bye conditions, They were still far from Satisfied. Succeeding generations 4st had to keep up the pace, And finally there was evolved a finer, nobler race. So, altho we think wes today the acme of pers fection, There will, beyond doubt, come a time when we could not pass inspec tion. Ihe best thing you and 7 can do before our racé is run, Will be to take our proper place that’s waiting “in the sun.” Keep up with the world’s progress, Do your best to help along, Take your place among the workers, For it's right where you belong.
