The Seattle Star nd-elaee matior jo Per month up te ¢ mes, ed at Beattie, My mast, out of otty, ene Fear, » MORE THAN 60,000 COPIES SOLD DAILY An Army Post for the Northwest Ranking in importance with the tourist rate victory is the announcement of the establishment of an army post for the Northwest, to be located on the vast prairie stretch between Tacoma and Olympia. The government has agreed to establish an army post, providing Pierce county will donate the necessary 70,000 acres of land. There isn’t a doubt but that Tacoma and Pierce county will meet the requirements. There is nowhere in the Northwest land so suitable for army purposes as is this prairie land. So far as The Star can see, there is no “pork” nor pull involved in this project. The Northwest is the logical place for an army post in connection with the government's new preparedness program and its logical location in the North- west is the site that has been selected. The President’s Message—Brief, Direct To those who expect something sensational whenever the president addresses congress, President Wilson’s address today will be disappointing There isn't a thrill in it. But to those who beliete that at this particular time in the r at clear-thinking, far-seeing statesmanship, based upon reason and | s th most to be desired in the man who has been chosen to guide our ies, the mes sage will make a strong appeal The address is notable for its brevity, clarity and directness The president urges congress to complete at its short session, which ends auto matically March 4, the forward-looking legislation which was but left un finished at the long sessi ending in Septe We think country will agree w t presic that the “ be time enough to start new things when the partly finished ones haxe been cnacted into law. The president does not favor compulsory arbitration, for the same reason that no one who approaches the subject with an open mind, favors it is absolutely con trary to the spirit of democracy and cotid not be enforced wi it creat a con dition of INDUSTRIAL SLAVERY There is a very great difference between saying to railway employes: “You must not strike until after the public has had a chance to decide as to the merits of your demands” and saying to them: “You mutt submit your demands to arbitration and continue to work, whether you want to or not, under the terms and nditions | down by the arbitrators.” The first is a reasonable proposition and we are inclined to thir id ai that the WORK ERS WILL AT LEAST BE WILLING TO HAVE IT TRIED The second is nothing more nor less than an attempt by capital to cr ! of lun tary industrial servitude in this ty and e f its most potent weapon—the right to stop work, er as The president asks for a law iging in t to take ¢ operate the railroads and draft train crews in case of t see how any one can object to this without raising a questi The president shows that he is just as keen striking some of the shackl off of legitimate business, as he was before election, by renewing and « ‘ recommendation for a law giving greater freedom of combination to t ¢ engaged in promoting foreign commerce, than is now thought by some be legal under t terms of the law against monopoly There will probably be objection to this by certain demagogues who will try to make it appear that it is against the interest of the common peor 1t we are inclined to think that the majority of the folk have no fears that Woodrow Wilson will be tray them to the business interests If congress will adopt the president’s suggestions. ‘pass the necessary appropriation bills and then adjourn, it will merit the country’s praise.
