F. D. No. 1 STAR—FRIDAY, JULY 21, 1916. D PURE sam A Dairy in the Southwest By 8 PAUL COWGILL OUND dairy barns are not particularly rare, but there ts probably only one dairy farm the whole plan of which, including the lots surrounding the butldings, is a large part of a circle, divided into many tore and covering 50 acres. This dairy caters to the milk trade of the thriving border city of El Paso, Texas The farm is located just eight miles from the « on a smooth road that borders the irrigated por tion of the Rio Grande valle Three hugdred and seventy-five cows, on the average, are milked the year round. The corporation in erated in three distinct unite the alfalfa farm, the dairy, and stributing ayatem in the city, each der separate management A Ke part of middieman’s profits ts tof a large dairy tion, In an arid * pra are fo » ure no natural pastures ated lands are not adapt ed for pasturing and, even if they were, this land ts too high tn value to be used for such @ purpose. If green forage is to be fed at all to dairy stock it must be solled or cut and hauled dally to racks in the feeding lots, The Texas cl! mate is particularly adapted to this practice, for green alfalfa can be eut during about eight months of the year T fairy buildings and feed lots are concentrated on an arid knoll of land covering about 60 acres of otherwise worthless land, across the road from the highly productive alfalfa farm. The lay out of ‘the dal an best be de seribed by comparing {t to a lady's fan, full spread. At the base of the handle of the fan is th ery, where the ating work tral be milking barns 20 cows each way as to form large ribs for the fan. Woven-wire fences divid ing the 50-acre semi-circle into see tora, with four sect or feeding lots to each barn, complete the general plan. This divides the herd into units of 30 cows for each lot Effictency of management is the essential porposs of this arrange ment of bulldings and feeding lots A large amount of work ts involved in the dally hauling of fresh-cut Ita for 400 high-productng cows ° fan-shaped arrangement places the lots close together and the hauling ts confined to a compara tively small area. Seven Mexicans et one dollar a day each, and two wagons, are required for this work The road passes thru and con nects all the feed lots, and touches the rear ends of four large hay barns, which are merely extensions of the milking barns. Here are stored concentrates and baled for use during the short winter. A small amount of dry alfalfa is fed during the reet of the year to balance the succulent allage that I* fed and to prevent bloating Another distinct advantage of th centralized arrangement is the effi easy m ement of such f imals, Sys efent ar a large herd of dai tem is easily maintained by having the large herd divided Into units of 30 animals each, and the least amount of labor Is required to earry on the dafly routine. The entire herd ts before the herdsman at all times, and records are easily kept, both of production and of breeding. The dairy maintains eight bulls After a cow tm dry she is pas thru three different lots where she Tecaives the attention and the proper feed needed at different periods before she in due to calve From one to three calves are almost ev The he plenish the managed on a plan muc that of the mil ing herd. They are kept in a cir cular system of lots, which have a tow of calf stanchions at the smal end. Ten calves form a unit, and they are passed from one lot to the next and fed different rations ac cording to age. There are fourteen milkers for the herd and the average time re quired for them to do thelr work in between five and six hours a day The barns are of the sim plest construction, with no side walls, and the cows run in the feeding lots except when they are being cleaned and milked, so the necessary iabor is reduced to a minimum Cleanliness and promptness are the two requirements that Invar lably strike the attention of the visitor, The cows are groomed for an hour each day; white sults arc worn by all who handle the milk and every precaution ts taken to keep the milk clean, to meet the strict requirements of the city board of health. Each operation ts started at the sound of a whistle from the boiler room, and the big motor truck starts to the city with its two-ton load of milk at a fixed time twice each day The average production of the herd ts about 9,000 pounds of milk a day, or a daily average of twenty-three to twenty-five pounds per animal, All cows In the herd, except for one string of thirty pure-breds, are grades, Among the purebred cows are three individu als that ha yearly records of more than 20,000 pounds of milk The average yearly production of the string of pure-bred Holstetna is more than 14,000 pounds of milk per cow.—Country Gentleman PAGE 38.
