Govan, Alvin Vrey, Proprietors. - Maple Leaf Private Dairy Fresh Milk and Cream Delfvered Daily Direct From the Producer to the Retests for Tuberculosis It {snot generally considered wiso to make a retest for tuberculosis within 60 days after the original test. On such retests two or even three times the normal dose of tuberculin should be used, It ta also advisable to begin taking the tem. peratures at about four hours after the injection of the tuberculin. On such retests some animals develop @ fever within a short period, and the fever persists for only @ short time, If negative results are ob tained on @ retest of animals that have given any indication of a re action on the original test, the re sults should be discounted very greatly. There ts a very great difference fn individual animals as to the way they act on retests. Some anima will apparently et at every in jection of the ‘culin, even tho injections are made only a few weeks apart. Other antmals will not react for a considerable period of ume, It !s considered unwise to return to a herd any animal that has given indications of a reaction on the original test. It is quite cer tain that the rete of such a als to a herd has caused the perpetua- tion of the disease fn many fn stances.—-B. G. Hastings, The Coun- try Gentleman, New York Guernsey Work The New York State Guernsey Breeders’ association has an exce) lent method for recognizing worth tn the cows of that state, Each year cups are awarded to the cows that have produced the highest percent age of butter fat above the require ments of thetr particular classes The cups are «iven by individual breeders in the state, and turned over to the association to be awa ed. The association had a rule t no man could win more than one cup in the same class in one year, but this year the rule was cnt out, and now one man may have all the cups if bis herd ts big enough and good enough. The Guernsey association was among the first sectional associa tions to work for the betterment of Guernsey cattle, and is the first to actively promote tnterest fn ad. vanced register work.—Country Gentleman, HYGIENIC DAIRY 1 lker y lacec Clean, Tuberculin-tested Cows, clean barns and milkers, have place Dairy Score among the highest in the city terested in “Better Milk” { our to visit the m and in- We invite those 1 spect our stock and dairy methods he most modern machinery, pure water a you a clean, pure and wholesome milk AUTO DELIVERY James Thomsen, Steve Thomsen, Proprietors PURE MILK You Want Phone Main 4379 WESTLAKE DAIRY M. 8. No. 1 Keeping Butter Rotter ts stored by the large com mission men for periods of a year without serious detertoration tn quality. This is done by having the tubs paraffined to prevent the es cape of moisture and the entrance of molda, and by having the temper. ature very low and constant. Butter, to kept for some time, should be put up in large tubs, rath er than in small packages, as loss Will be less, and the amount of but- ter which may be off flavor, due to being on the outside of the pack- 6, Will be correspondingly lean When you wish to take one of the tubs out of storage, remove the but ter from the tub and immerse in weak brine. In this condition it will keep until used—G. F. 8, Country Gentleman. . New Creamery The success of a creamery is de pendent first of all upon obtaining a sufficient quantity of cream. One would not be justified in erecting a creamery unless assured an average of 1,000 pounds of butter fat a week, or the cream produced by 400 cows. Tf an investigation of dairy con ditions in a neighborhood warrants the erection of a creamery, an in. yestment of from $4,000 to $4,500 would be required to construet and moderately equip the plant. The equipment should be installed by an expert, and the services of a good buttermaker should be procured to operate the plant. Inefficient man- agement has been the cause of the failure of more creameries than any other one thing.—G. & HM, Country Gentleman. Contagious Scours Disinfection of the navel when there is danger of contagious scours {# good treatment. However, a calf be infected thru the mouth nursing. It ts hardly possible to disinfect barns and stalls thoroly enough to prevent some contamina tion of the udder. Therefore it is advisable to vaccinate all calves ti modiately after birth. The vaccination of the calves, if dono immediately, has given « results, It is now claimed that the calf may be immunized against con tagious scours by vaccinating the mother before its birth. This prac tice is still in the experimental stage, The danger from white scours can be largely eliminated by keeping all cows and heifers due to calf entirely away from the barr and all lots where there {x any manure.
