STAR-—MONDAY, THE SEATILE STAR By mail, out of city, one year oper month up te @ mos My carrier, city, #80 & month Thomson, Moore and the Council HERE are many people in Seattle who think The Star has been duped by the candidacies of Regi nald H. Thomson, former city engineer, and Judge W. H. Moore, former mayor, who are now running for the council. 3 é Particularly does the rumor go about town that The Star has been neatly tricked and fooled b those who are anxious to have Thomson in the council. Perhaps The Star HAS been duped. Perhaps Judge Moore, who has proved himself loyal to the interests of the general public in the State senate, on the bench, and as mayor, has now “sold out” to corporate interests. Perhaps Reginald H. Thomson, for many years identified with municipal ownership enterprises, is now a corporation lackey. This may be true, but The Star cannot believe it—and will not believe it—on mere vague rumor and unfounded suspicion. It is true that men of the Thomson and Moore stamp do not often run for such offices as the city council. But that fact alone is not sufficient to cause suspicion. Rather, it entitles them to encourage ment. : Various friends of The Star have called up by telephone and have written letters lamenting “a Situation by which the foes of municipal ownership are going to put Thomson and Moore over with- out protest by The Star.” maz If Thomson and Moore are not the men The Star thinks they are, if they have changed their Public policies, if all their years of public service in the past are no guide of their loyalty to the common welfare in the present, THOSE WHO HAVE THE INFORMATION TO PUT THE STAR ON » THE RIGHT TRACK SHCULD TALK PLAINLY AND DEFINITELY BY PRODUCING THE FACTS. ‘ The Star has no axes to grind. Say so. 4 In the meantime, however, The Star is not going to be guided by the thinnest sort of suspicion, Sand it hopes it is too broadminded to accept the view that, because some other newspaper or news- papers are supporting any candidate, The Star should therefore oppose him. It may be that the other newspapers are supporting Thomson and Moore because they have been beaten 0 often, and want to, for once at least, “get on” a pair of winners. If it is mistaken in Thomson and Moore, it will be quick to to Gov. Craig F GOVERNOR CRAIG does not interfere, North Carolina will electrocute a woman, next month. And the North Carolina Press probably threw a fit when the Germans executed Miss Cavell.. One is a convicted murderess, the other was a devoted nurse, yet women, both. The execution of Mrs. Warren will be only in degree less horrible than that of Nurse Cavell Everything Goes HE allies’ strong pressure upon Greece is called by the Germans “assassination of a nation which refuses to commit suicide,” it being suspected that a republic is to be made, with Venizelos as its Greece is pretty much a monarchy by marriage only. The allies are really after the kaiser's sister, m of Greece, and the way to get to her is to get Constantine and his crown. Making republics is r business for some of the allies, but the end is made to justify the means in a good many spots in =| Miss Grey: “ABSOLVE|would, but has no cash and | don't LF TO YOURSELF,” said [trust him. | am going away from nd «=America has pro-|this city, so how could he pay me! wiser man.
