Membew of the Sertppe Northwest League ‘of Newspapers Published Dally by The Star Publishing Co. Thome Main 9400 “STOP THIEF!” HO is the first to join’ the victim in crying, “Stop Thief”? It is usually the thief himself if he hasn’t had time enough to make his escape. Who is responsible for the Renick law, the chief cause of our “higher taxes”? It is the Chamber of Commerce, the Grouch, and the discredited members of the legislature. The city has $3,000,000 in the banks—but it cannot use its own money. The Renick law stops it. And so, the city is compelled at the present time to issue warrants, AND TO PAY INTEREST ON THE WARRANTS, Thousands of dollars of interest have already been heaped upon the shoulders of the people of Seattle by the Renick law. And THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS MORE WILL HAVE TO BE BORNE BY THE PEOPLE IN TAXES BECAUSE OF THE - RENICK LAW. An item of $30,000 is being levied for 1916 to meet the extra costs of interest due to the Renick law. The Chamber of Commerce and the kept press have kept silent about this item. They would like it hushed up altogether, perhaps. The said about the Renick law the better for the cham- ber, the Grouch and a rotten legislature. But the $30,000 item isn’t all. The Renick law is going to cost.the city much more than that. With the elimination of a Renick law tax item in less [Outbursts of Everett True } | See Up a CHRISTAAS ENTER UPA r * TAINMENT FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE the budget yesterday, the matter isn’t closed, by any means. Next July, when debts must be paid, and the tax collections haven't yet come in fully— what will the city do? Will it go to the banks where it has this $3,000,000 on deposit and withdraw some of it temporarily? No, the Renick law prohibits that. The city will go to the banks, instead, and ask for a loan. It will probably get the loan. Why not? It will be getting its own money as a loan and it will be paying interest on its own money. That’s the Renick law frenzied finance. And it’s no wonder the Chamber and its news- paper allies are trying to drown out the complaints against the Renick law by shouting “higher taxes.” Whatever “higher taxes” there are, you can thank the chamber and its newspaper mouthpieces. And common thieves, you should remember, are not the only ones who cry “Stop Thief.” Shrewd, cunning, scheming politicians do that, too. THE PANTRY is the best place for family jars. But w@ have not yet learned how to graft that idea onto our school systems. Seattle’s school system has been praised as one of the best, if not the foremost. It is the best, only, of present-day systems—systems which are not builded upon the idea of teaching useful occupations. In Seattle, as elsewhere, there is much room for the development of the newer idea. ‘TIS BETTER to be disappointed in love than in marriage. “A NEW broom sweeps clean”—but the average jani- tor always uses an old one THE CHRISTMAS season finds Europe full of the give-and-take spirit.
