Phone Main v4co GREECE IN THE FRYING PAN HREATENED on the one hand by the central powers if she refrains from disarming any Ser- bian troops which may take refuge within her bor- ders; on the other hand, already subjected to a commercial and economic blockade, and further menaced by the allied fleets, if she does not a once demobilize her army, Greece stands to lose either way the cards fall. She has let pass her opportunity. Pledged to assisi Serbia by an honorable treaty, Greece was confidently expected by all the world—save pos- sibly Germany—to at once take up arms against Bulgaria, if that country attacked Serbia. Had she done so at the beginning of the Bulgarian move- ment the devoted Serbian: army would have been saved. In all probability Rumania would have fol- lowed her lead and the invasion of Serbia by the central powers would have been a failure. Greece was offered concessions by Great Britain which, one year ago, were beyond her wildest hopes. Now those offers have been withdrawn, In the event of an allied victory, Greece can expect nothing in the way of territorial gain, no matter what her future course may be, for’ the quadruple entente will not pay for forced allegiance. : SAY, SMITH, ISN'T (T ABOUT TIME “1/ fOR You To SETTLE UP THaT BALANCE ON OUR “Urrce DEAL YOU PROMISED To Do iT BY Se FIRST OF LAST Wa I SAY YouR HEARING |S PRETTY Bad WHEN YOU WANT A LUTTLE TIME TO FRAME UP AN excuse If! \ The 25,000 inhabitants credited | | to Dawson City, Y. Bul- garia’s act was bold and open, She plays for large stakes, and, win or lose, must command respect. Scorned for her treachery, despised for her pusillanimity, Greece faces a gloomy prospect as a nation, for which her alien-mated king, not the Greek people, is doubtless responsible. GUSTAV SCHWEPPENDICK, Brlin correspond- ent, writes that “Germany has no words severe enough to express its indignation or to characterize the bull- dozing tactics of the allies,” in shaking the mailed fist at poor little Greece, In other words, ‘‘Gottstrafe” is inadequate to the occasion. There is no use in looking any further, If there are no words in the same dictionary with Schweppendick sufficiently expressive to serve, there aren't any such words. It's just a dirty trick of England's to bring reproach and shame upon the hither- to entirely sufficient German lexicon. THESE ARE indeed gloomy days for the street railway magnates. CAPT. OMAR HUMPHREY, port candidate, calls coaling facilities in Elliott bay “antiquated and inade- quate.”” Most ships coming here take on coal in British Columbia, he declared. J. C. Ford, president of the Pacific Coast Coal company, then comes to the front with a statement that Seattle has the best coaling facili- ties of any port on the Pacific Coast, which seems to leave Capt. Humphrey high and dry. Incidentally, it is pointed out that Capt. Humphrey is agent for a British Columbia coal company.
