It would appear, at first glance, that such course is little short of treachery. But there is another side to the propo- sition which may make the act excusable, both from a moral and a military standpoint. Russia, France and Great Britain rallied nobly to her support and twice, when Serbia was menaced by the Austrian hordes and threatened with destruc- tion, her allies exerted a pressure to repulse the in- yaders. Then came the time when the future atti- tude of Bulgaria depended upon concessions from Serbia, which Serbia flatly refused to grant. Bul- garia, therefore, lined up with the central powers. At the present time, with the final decision of Greece hanging in the balance, with the Greek army mobilized and ready to strike, with the only avail- able route of communication running thru Greek territory, should the allies send troops to the north- east corner of Serbia, where she is being assailed, and Greece then enter the conflict upon the side of the central powers as Bulgaria has done, the greatest catastrophe might follow. It is best to reserve judgment upon this point until the mass of conflicting evidence is officially sifted. The significant thing, the most deplorable, is the manner in which the tidings have been received in neutral countries. The sinking of the Lusitania horrified the world; a storm of protest and expos- tulation arose which re-echoed from pole to pole.
