STAR—SATURDAY, SEPT. 18, 1915. PAGE 4, ) | === EDITORIAL PAGE OF THE SEATTLE STAR 2222222: THE DANGEROUS “ HE lesson taught by the report of the board of preliminary investigation of the F-4 disaster is that the F-4 and all its sister “‘F’ boats are of the “type classed in the navy as dangerous.” If we are correct in our inference, this dis- tinguishes the “F” type from other submarines, which are not dangerous or, at least, less dangerous, If so, then, instead of raising the F-4, the other three submarines of the same type should be loaded with junk, instead of sailors, and sunk alongside of her. The best type is none too good, nor the safest too safe, for Uncle Sam’s boys. The thought that the navy department continues to use vessels com- monly classed as dangerous is disturbing. To abandon their use altogether would be the highest tribute we might pay to the F-4 heroes. MAYBE ENGLAND EXPECTS Betis Red Cross representatives have com- pleted arrangements whereby convalescent sol- diers from the Dardanelles are to be quartered and cared for at various health resorts in the Crimea and Caucasus. Inasmuch as it will be impossible to get the men there until the Dardanelles are open, the visit of the Red Cross committee at this time seems to indicate that England expects “something to drop” in the Dardanelles very soon. WAS COUNTY FARM BUY ON SQUARE? IF THESE THINGS ARE TRUE: That the county commissioners, in purchas- ing “The Willows” farm, do not intend to move the county’s dependent poor from their present inadequate quarters at Georgetown, and That “The Willows” is actually worth but a fraction of the price agreed upon with C. D. Stimson—$113,707, and That the.commission intends merely to ex- periment in produce farming, and That other farmers besides Stimson had been informed that there was to be a public hearing at which they might offer their properties for sale, and That everybody concerned, with the exception of Millionaire Stimson and the two commissioners that voted in favor of buying his place, has been “bilked,” then f THE STAR BELIEVES THE CHAMBER OF | COMMERCE IS RIGHT, AND HEARTILY AP- PROVES OF ITS ATTEMPT TO FOIL THE PURCHASE OF “THE WILLOWS.” THE STAR PLEDGES ITS SUPPORT, IN EVERY MANNER POSSIBLE, TO FORCE THE COMMISSION TO QUASH ITS AGREEMENT WITH MR. STIMSON, GIVE HIM BACK HIS FARM AND SWALLOW ITS OWN CHAGRIN, @ o . MARY PHAGAN TALKS .°. By Mary White Ovington, in the New Republic. You care a lot about me, you men of Georgia, now that I am dead. You have spent thousands of dollars trying to learn who mutilated my body. You have filled the columns of your newspapers with the story of my wrong. You have broken into a prison and murdered a man that I might be avenged. But why did you not care for me when I was alive? I was a child, but you shut me out of the daylight. You held me within four walls watching a machine that crashed thru the air. Endlessly watching a knife as it cut a piece of wood. Noise fills the place—noise, dust and the smell of oil. I wish some of the thousands of dollars that you spent on the trial might have kept me in school. A real school—the kind you build for the rich. I worked thru the hot August days, When you were bossing the girls, or shooting birds, Or lounging in doorways cursing the nigger; And you never paid me enough to buy a pretty dress. You sometimes spoke coarsely to me when I went to and from my work; Yes, you did, and | had to pretend I liked it. WHY DID YOU DESPISE ME LIVING AND YET LOVE ME SO NOW?
