BUT WHY WOULD ‘THE GAMBLERS WANT TO ELIMINATE LANG? WHAT HAS HE EVER DONE TO HURT THEM? WHEN DID LANG EVER MOLEST THEM? : Gambling has run full blast in Seattle since Lang has become chief. There has been no police effort to close them up. Why would the card sharps and crap shooters and lottery fakers feel unkindly toward Louis | ang? Considering his position to harm their ‘“busi- ness” and his failure to do so, LANG HAS BEEN AS GOOD A FRIEND OF THE GAMBLERS AS THEY HAVE IN THE CITY TODAY. No, Mr. Lang, the gamblers don’t want you fired. And you can’t make any one believe they do GOD FORBID! SHOULD ST FOR MAY BE COURAGE, OVER THERE AS’ “PROOF of Germany’s economic strength,” a Berlin newspaper proudly announces that the General Electric Co, of Germany has had the courage to increase its capitalization, This “proof” doesn’t permeate and pre-empt our conviction, as it were. Why, in our own country we've seen capitali- zation raised from $2,000 to $20,000,000, without the slightest suspicion of courage or economic soundness about it. We've even seen starts made on $20,000,000 capitalization without one derned- iota of economic strength about It, save the gall of the president and directors and 10 reams of beauti- fully printed stock certificates, Germany may be economically O. K. and her General Electric Co. may be a perfect mint, but it’s simply playing low-down on our reputation for intellect to offer us proof in the shape of increased capitalization. We're already dead drunk on that sort of prosperity, figuratively speaking. |!A Married Man’s Troubles ANYBODY CAN HAVE ONE i EV. BILLY SUNDAY has so urgently preached a rip-snorting devil and red-hot hell at them that he seems to have generated grave doubts of their existence in the minds of many Pacific coast people. Among the earliest of recorded instances of our acquaintance with the devil is that interview had with him by Mother Eve, an incident in which, we understand, both Rev. Sunday and his dis- tinguished: challenger, Rev. Chas, Aked, have full belief. On this very rare occasion of personal contact, the deyil appears to have acted like a gentleman, being suave in his address, sympathetic and politely argumentative, rather than offensively insistent. Subsequent results would seem to indicate that Mother Eve’s reception of his friendliness and ad- vice was an error; that, instead of listening to his wiles, she should have run her hatpin into him, after the policy of Rev. Sunday; made it hellish hot for him, as Rev. Sunday would say; and been able to go back to good old Adam without any fatal apples. In short, it is Rev. Sunday's policy to tear the mask off the devil and present him to us in all his personal force and ugliness, as Eve saw him not. However, no matter pearance or the degree of what the personal ap- active operation of the devil in these later times, each of us can create for WHAT ARE You GRUMBLING ABouT OLIVIA ? Some of us may require the Satanic hoofs, horns and breath of fiery brimstone, while others one of secondary get devilish thru the quieter processes of insinuation and inoculation, and there cannot onably be a hot quarrel over the way we cast the vil out of us, so long as we get rid of him. A DUBIOUS PRECEDENT HE constitutional convention of New York has before it a proposed amendment which is an extremely dangerous one and not deserving of the serious consideration it is being given. The proposition is to give to Spanish war veterans preference in civil service, which is rank class legislation and opposed to the very funda- mentals of civil service. If the Spanish war veterans deserve recogni- tion, because they happened to be of fighting age in 98, it should come in some manner not preju- dicial to the rights of others. In this case it’s New York’s affair alone but, unhappily, precedents established by New York are sometimes accepted elsewhere. By Allman | AW -=CAN7r You TAKE A Joxe?
