THE HYPHEN AS AN ISSUE <\ OME eminent Berliners, who wm about us unnecessarily, send that “if the German-American vote stood solidly are worrying word across together on any issue it could control a national election.” This is a mistake, somewhat laughable to any one who understands much about our poli tics. Get a nationality behind any issue in Amer- ica and you can rely upon every other nationality voting the other way. Even so-called pure-blooded Americans have made a fizzle of that sort of thing, and we can assure our Berlin friends that if anybody starts a German-American issue over here, it will be sat French-Americans, Hungar- and all upon by British-Americans, Italian-Americans, Canadian-Americans, ian-Americans, American-Americans others, hyphenated or unhyphenated. The sentiment of naturalized Germans and Germans by extraction may go a certain way in this country, and it often does, but the issue that makes a division on nationality always gets laid out cold, and this is as it should be. We're pretty well mixed up and we wear a lot of hyphens, but we sure don’t let any particular hyphen run us. She proposes to pass a law making strikes and lock-outs illegal and arbitration compulsory, and limiting the profits of employers. War is horrible, but it also instructive. Here is a measure aimed at benefit to the whole people, regardless of the classes, and it will surely be asked why, if it is the best thing in war times, it isn’t the best in time of peace.
