Member of the Sertpps Northwest League of Newapapers Published Dally by The Star Publishing Oo. Phone Main 9400 THINK THIS OVER, MR. HESKETH CANVASS of the city council indicates that Councilman Hesketh will cast the vote at Mon- day’s meeting which will decide the fate of the McBride pure milk ordinance. All right. , Here’s something for you to turn over in your mind, Mr. Hesketh, over Sunday. The Tacoma city health department is prepar- ing to give wide publicity to the fact that Tacoma has safe milk, and that Seattle hasn't. “Many mothers will visit the Northwest this summer on their way to the fairs,” says Health Officer Wall of Tacoma. “We want them to feel that their children will be sate in this city.” “A special point mentioned by Dr. Wall,” says an article published in that city, “is that in Seattle, while there is an ordinance requiring that all dairy cows supplying the city with milk be given the tuberculin test, the measure does not prevent the sale of milk from cows not tested. It simply pro- vides that milk be marked ‘tested’ or ‘not tested.’ “In Tacoma,” said Dr. Wall, “the ordinance prevents the sale of milk from cows which have reacted to the test for tuberculosis.” Think it over, Mr. Hesketh. STAR—SATURDAY, JUNE 26, 1915. Oliton’s Hen House, Made Out of Gambling Tables W ? TAKE off our hat to Harry Stein, a deputy sheriff of Creek county, Oklahoma, For we are proud of the use he has madé of two poker tables, a crap table and lumber that was part of a bar. He has taken all this gambling paraphernalia, which he seized in a raid on a gambling house, and with it has built in his home town of Oilton, Okla- homa, the hen house shown in the accompanying PACE 4, photograph. Look closely at the picture and you can see half a poker table that makes up one part of the front wall, another half on the roof, while a dicing table can be seen as part of another wall. The house is lined with green fett. (Why the felt covering of gambling tables always is green we do not know, although it always suggests to us the green graves of the wives and mothers whose deaths it has caused from broken hearts.) But to go back to the hen house. Again we say we take off our hat to Harry Stein, because he has shown: What to do with gambling paraphernalia! A STRAIN FOR CONVICT HONOR SYSTEM ARDEN EDMUND M., ALLEN’S honor system among the convicts of Joliet, Ill, resulted in a terrible tragedy. His beautiful wife was murdered by a trusty. That his faith in the honor system remains firm in spite of the ferocious act of one crfminal is a mark of Warden Allen's consistency. For the great majority of convicts the honor sys- tem is applicable. That the act of one criminally insane man should retard this movement toward greater humanity toward man is a calamity—not only to those unfortunates in prisons, but to the world. Shorter trade routes to the south increase the danger from tropical dis- eases 879 3-4 per cent, or thereabouts, and so forth. In the South American countries are germs that haven't yet been used to make nightmares for us. For these new germs, new disinfectants, in- jections, physics, operations have got to be got up. It’s going to be new style to grunt or die with some tropical disorder. The great American appendix is de trop. You've got to have a Peruvian worm in order to suffer or die fashionably. The American Society of Tropical Medicine, in session at San Francisco, urges doctors to take up special training on tropical germs. They will. They'll train their patients, too. Our established germs are too ordinary, unaristocratic, shop-worn. The new tropical parasite gets the medical glad hand. A FOOL AND HIS HAIR YOUTH of Minnesota, of wealthy but honest parents, made a wager that he would not have his hair trimmed during the duration of the European war. Notwithstanding the entreaties of his friends and relatives, he remained obdurate, but says he will have it cut the moment the war ends. It might well be suggested that when that time comes, the young man have the amputation per- formed just below the chin. !A Married Man’s Troubles By Allman i] | OF HELLO~ | JUST STOPPED To SHOW You \"JIMMN" MY NEW PET - SEE I CARRY Him IN MN MUPF THE SAME AG ARs VERWON ‘Outbursts of Everett Tru en OW HERE COMES DELLA PAD! 1 SUPPOSE we Lt HAVE ToLISTEN AND You TO A LOT OF SILLY TALI ~ Oo PROMISED To Mow THE LAWN, BUT THAT '8n'T DONE FOR.
