KERBY WASHINGTON, May 29.—So far as munitions of war are con- cerned, the United States is probably In better position to face a possible emergency than ever before. The enormous In- cre in capacity of plants turning out rifles, powder, am- munition and big guns since the beginning of the European war has made the output of such articles the greatest in the his- tory of the country. Before the outbreak of the war abroad the capacity of plants in the United States— public and private—for manu- facturing small arms ammuni- tion, did mot exceed 5,000,000 rounds per week. Today, according to the best obtainable information, the five big plants turning out this class of ammunition are producing 30,000,000 rounds per week. Some of the necessary war muni- jtions are manufactured in govern ment plants; some in private plants The present model Springfield tn- fantry rifle, for example, is made in two government arsenals; one at | Rock Island, Il, the other at Spring: field, Maas. These two plants, working at full capacity, 24 hours a day, can prob- lably turn out about 1,5 |day, or something more than half a million @ year, Selling Rifles Abroad | | jthe war, private plants have been fmanufacturing infantry rifles for [the various foreign governments |The private plants of the Reming- ton Arms Co.,, Ilion, N. Y., and the |Winchester company at New | Haven, Conn., as well as the Stevens jArms company, at Chicopee Falls | Mass., could all be used in case of lemergency. As there are already on hand suf. ficient rifles to equip an army of at least 500,000 men, it la clear that we are well provided so far as small arms goes Two Artillery Plants As to heayy artillery, both for army and navy use, the government has two large plants in operation. These are located at the naval gun factories at Washington, D. C., and Watervilet, N. Y. The private jconcerns turning out heavy guns are the Bethlehem Steel company and the Midvale Steel company, in | Pennsylvania All the military powder used in| this country is manufactured either | at the government plant at Indian Head, Md., or by the Dupont com pany, Which has very greatly of the war ate 24, Mountain View| urday night at 8 o'clock in the Man-| 3 “In this ol jufacturers’ auditorium OH, You.
