There is labor ready. “There are end things to do, opportunities everywhere. Why, | could eee them out of the car window all the way up the coast to Seattle. “You men in finance and busi- ness must get into politics, The bankers and busin men of New York city are doing It. You must do it here in Seattle.” These are a few extracts from the speech made before the Seattle Clearing House and the Chamber jof Commerce at the Washington hotel Wednesday night by Frank A. Vanderlip, president of the Na- tional City bank, the largest finan- celal institution in the country. The banquet was given in his honor, Vanderlip arriving in Seattle earlier in the day. He is returning to New York by way of Seattle from Los Angeles, where he has spent the last thr months, recuperating from an a tack of typhoid. A big, virile figure, Vanderlip \commands attention instantly. His |rise in the financial world w: Poi and almost reads like a nov ie is 50 years old today. He began his career as a news- paper reporter in Chicago, and after Severs! years became financial editor of the Chicggo Tribune. His department soon was recognized as a financial authority in the Middle West and attracted the attention of Secretary of the Treasury Lyman J. Gage, who appointed Vanderlip as his private secretary, and in 1897 Vanderlip was made assistant sec- Tetary of the treasury. In this position, Vanderlip at- tracted the attention of J. P. Mor gan, and in 1901 Vanderlip was made vice president of the National City bank. In 1909, James Stillman retired and Vanderlip was appoint- ed president. In his address Wednesday night, Vanderlip dwelt on the opportuni- dressed the College club. He leaves for the East Thursday night. NO BIDS FOR SUN No bids for the complete plant of the Sun have been made, Re ceiver S, P. Weston announced Thursday. With George H. Walk- er, receiver's attorney, he went over the half dozen proffers turned in. A report to the court will be made on these within 48 hours, he id. Until such time as the judge jorders otherwise, he added, bids ‘for the newspaper establishment as ja unit will be accepted.
