A NEW YEAR'S LETTER. |} ae a RO tee te 4 aed OT RO 2 ne oe ROC NARI tly Aa 8 AO er AO (ROR 2 7 | EW of our citizens born and reared in our good city can realize its wonderfully rapid and especially substantial growth of the last twenty-five years. During these years we have greatly increased in population; have extended our territory very materially and our commerce and manufacturers have likewise grown apace with this wonderful record, this being evidenced by the fact that our citizens generally have prospered, and distress and want in our midst, comparatively speak- ing, is at a minimum, and much of this is relieved by a generous, almost paternal, charity that is characteristic of our people. Not the least important of public service operations is that of the laundries of our city. Notwithstanding the cost of operation has materially increased through operation of the law, advance in the cost of materials and remuneration to employes (the pay-roll alone being more than 50 per cent of the gross receipts), an investigation would demonstrate that laundry service has progressed with everything else, although the laundry prices have practically remained the same. Among the numerous items that contribute to the general increase in the cost of operation is that of delivery. In every other kind of business there is only one delivery from shop to home to consider, but in the laundry a double trip or more is necessary, calling for and delivering all packages free. This item alone is of amazing proportion, amounting to thousands of dollars each month. The plants of Seattle are today models of modern ingenuity in process, cleanliness and sanitation, guaranteeing the most careful treat- ment to garments and for their patrons, and healthful apartments for those who of necessity: must earn their living from this industry. The laundries have no merchandise to offer, they have only service to sell, and it is their constant effort to maintain this high degree of efficiency, assuring to their patrons cleanliness and promptness in the handling of their apparel. The people of Seattle generally do not realize the importance of cleanliness, sanitation and efficiency in our modern laundries. The laundrymen do, and they invite your inspection. With these sentiments deeply engrossed in mind, and with a full measure of sincere gratitude to those who by their patronage have assisted in this real progress, we wish one and all a happy, healthful and prosperous New Year.
