The work will be accomplished by @ specially equipped salvage lighter. The first thing attempted was to pass several stout bawsers about the hull of the submarine. The work was very slow and dif. ficult, because of the pressure of _ the water. The submarine lies in 33 fath- oms of water, nearly 200 feet, and it is tmpossible for divers to re main below more than 25 minutes. Thus the work of adjusting the hawsers had to be done by relays. It was estimated that it would take all day, perhaps even longer, | to get the submarine up. She lies more than a mile and a half from where she was supposed to come up last Friday afternoon, and is deeply imbedded tn sand.
