HOME EDITION ONE CENT ohwieri soe te Whatever his past frimy have been, Convict No. 2146 has redeemed it. He has done more for prison reform than any reformer living. The report of the federal grand jury on conditions in Uncle Sam’s prison on McNeil’s Island bears out the charges made by Convict No. 2146 in The Star and makes recommendations which, if acted on, should transform that institution from a hell on earth to a model prison. Look at the map. McNeil’s Island is tucked away in a corner. Geographically and actually, it is er It has seldom been inspected. In his little world of guards and convicts, the warden was a ing. | To McNeil’s Island went a man, young and clean of body, under the ban of the law, and he became No. 2146. -He fell victim, he says, to the black plague. He saw others, a¢ clean of body at the outset as himself, fall victims to the black plague. He had nothing to gain, and much to lose, by complaining. Any reformation could not help him. The plague had him, and he was doomed. Nevertheless, there must dwell in the breast of this man, convict and outcast though he be, a sense of that duty which every man owes to his fellow. \ He ‘ ' \< wrote letters telling tions in the prison—letters to persons in authority, letters to persons of wealth and i fluence, and finally, letters c f , His letters did not reach The Star Finally, in his extremity, he ¢ d lan at or usible and bizarre, for letting the “c le” know his complaint, of the Christi: On the margins of an old copy c an Science Journal he wrote with a pcinted stick in invisible ink. +) "The forward coach of the third plowed half-way toned ul VANS TiiibleT In t ti lares the complaints to ver the conditions wher Convict No. 2146 says that the sanitary conditions at through the e train in fron’ “The dane: TAYLOR, Mise LLER!
