The scientists are Prof. W. B. |Herms of the University cf Call- jfornia and Dr. W. A. Sawyer. Recently it was discovered that wherever a case of infantile paral- lysis developed there was a barn near by from which stable flies jcame, biting the victims of the dis lease and seemingly selecting them \for attacks. The theory is that the letable files carry the paralysis \germs, transmitting them to chil- idren. | In order to prove this theory is jcorrect, and if it is, to discover | something that will kill the germ, Prof. Herms and Dr. Sawyer are jhatching thousands of flies and as soon as the first brood was suffi- jelently developed to bite they were liberated in the cage with the monkeys for a meal. If the theory should work out the monkeys will untimately become afflicted with infantile paralysis d then the medical men can work on them in their efforts to discover something to counteract the germs carried by the flies. The first sign of infar' ite ysis in the monkeys will laration of war against the fly. It is figured that this pest oc- | cuples the same position to the in- fantile paralysis germ as the mos- quito does to typhoid fever—that it is a carrier and distributor of the germs. The sclentists are compelled to use monkeys in their experiments as this is the only animal known that so closely resembles a human being that it fs susceptible to in- fantile paralysis. The experiments are the outcome of the recent epidemic of the dig ease in Los Angeles and several other nearby sections of California, The state is paying the bill REVISION OF COURTS PORTLAND, Or. Why, a “DUNN” newsy is one who belongs to B. A. Dunn's select and exclusive organization, the na- tional newsboys’ association, To belong to it you've got to be a regu- lar newsy, and you've got to sign a pledge to be honest, never steal, swear or bully smaller boys, and never to touch Hquor or tobacco. Besides that, “well-Dunn” or “tailor. made” newsles in Dallas are more respectful than those who “don't be- long.” B, A, Dunn is a Dallas tailor; but his more exciting occupation is be- ing friends with every newsboy in the city. He has made the troubles of those friendless waifs his own Je organized the boys into an as- sociation and got somebody to give them a downtown house for head- quarters. Before then the city’s policemen had complained much about the fighting, cursing and dishonesty of the boys, Dunn was foxy. He made every member of the association a police- man, whose duty it Is to watch the others and report violations of the agsoclation's pledges and rales.
