Roosevelt promises, so far as he has the opportunity, to revise the tariff down ward, All three candidates are, according to their speeches, really more or leas in favor of protection. It is largely a question of good faith. Roosevelt favors a tariff commission, but not the kind of a| tariff commission favored by Mr. Taft. “I am not tn favor of a tariff commission,” says he, “the report of which may be used as a pretext for vetoing good tariff legislation. 1 am in favor of a tariff commission which will have power to secure real Information and which will make definite and convincing reports as to what should be done in revising specific schedules. It should have ample powers to caable it to secure exact and reliable informa tion. It should have authority to examine closely all correlated sub jects. It should directly consivier the question as to what any duty costs the people in the price of living.
