The voters of King County will be called upon to decide on November 5, this year, as to the policy the commissioners shall adopt in regard to the con- struction and maintenance of our principal highways, If you are one of the voters, and particularly if you are a taxpayer (and every voter pays taxes either directly or indirectly), you should make it your business to read very carefully every evning, in this paper, the actual facts about our public highways, their construction and maintenance and method of paying for same. You will be called on to decide with your vote whether an expensive, extravagant and old-fashioned method of paying for our highways shall be con- tinued. You will be informed through these columns what your present roads HAVE cost you, what they ARE costing now and what they WILL cost you in the future, along present lines. You will be informed, reliably and correctly, what a new type of road will cost you NOW and what it WILL cost you in the future. This new type of construction is in the same class as such PERMA- NENT improvements that you already know about and have long: approved of, such as cement side- walks, steel and stone constructed public buildings, sewer systems and the paving of streets carrying heavy traffic with the best possible pavements on PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE BASE. You will be shown that properly constructed country roads, even when built with borrowed funds, are NOT BY ANY MEANS a luxury or extravagance, but that they are absolutely NECESSARY to our nor- mal developments, socially, intellectually and com- mercially; also that the construction of PERMANENT ROADS, at this time, is the only practical means of stopping the frightful and INEXCUSABLE WASTE of millions of dollars in repairing and _ rebuilding ONCE “ideal,” NOW “castaway” roads, which neces- sitate the drawing upon you for large taxes to keep them in serviceable shape.
