FOR PRESIDENT bot Bats cafeteria, First | Seoretary ot "Stat © Philander C. Knox had his little say at the Moore | theatre last night. The theatre was gt, from 11 to 2 to jcrowded, and it's an even bet ty that your can-| whether there were more Roosevelt ited. The ballots or Taft supporters present. There! he. care of by represen | were also quite a gathering of WIL wm the different political | sonites and not a few socialists, All factions got a chance to do their = own applauding. 1 = Tn fact, the first real demonstra- MSFeCG |tion of ihe evening was for Col Roosevelt. After that the Taft crowd had one awful time trying to outrival it. “1 Am a Trimmer" Humphrey was chairman of the meeting, you know. When he came upon the stage with Knox, somebody sug gested cheers for Himphrey. A |doxen OF so mustered courage and gave three sickly cheers. Humphrey was not supposed to make @ speech last nicht. The Taft managers knew better than to let “Trimmer” Humphrey talk to a Se attle crowd. Bat Humphrey didn't obey in- struction, He ee ee so long that RRHAL Now | aed the crowd got tmpatient and started to call for Knox, Several times they laughed right out at him, And when he mentioned Roosevelt's name, It was greeted by wild cheers and applause that lasted for more than a minute, When he was final ly yelled off the stage, Humphrey | sulked fh his seat and for a long! While failed to join the applause even for Taft wheo it was given oo casionally, Secretary Knox took his cue from the reception given to Humphrey and avoided using Roosevelt's name for at least the first half of his Speech. He began his speech by addressing Dmselt to Humphrey and undoubtedly “jollying” him, as he sal “After knowing you for 10 years, | am gi! to notice how well they ap- Preciate you In Seattle and how fa- millarty they cal! you here.” A big shout of laughter greeted this pleasantry, Knox then read his speech, Throughout the reading, there w: keen rivalry between the Taft and the Reosevelt faction to show which could put up the most applause a the rival standard bearers were mentioned. Several times, tho crowd was moved to laughter as Knox referred to the republican party keeping faith on (Se tariff and other questiona, Knox pteaded that } Taft Was & progressive and the re publican party Ikewlee, Towards the conclusion of his speech, he sald that the “danger was not in the democratic party” from a Taft standpoint, aud this remark was | areeted by a howl of delight from | the Roosevelt crowd, Ex-Senator Piles tried to make a speech after Knox but no one paid any attention to him. The crowd left. Saturday night. Don't miss the big meeting at the Coliseum thea tre, when Senator Miles Poindexter “Bob” Hodge will speak. Here is a poll of the Robinson Manufacturing Co. employes in Ey- erett: Roosevelt, 49; Debs, 29; Wil son, 25; Taft, 9; Chafin, 3. And the Amphion Singing society shows: Roosevelt, 27; Wilson, 8; Taft, 2. = HODGE INVITES HAY TO JOINT CAMPAIGN “Rob” Hodge, progressive cand! for governor, has invited Gov. Hay to devote a week of the canr paign together, to speak to the same crowds from the same platforma,) and to let the people thus size them | both up at the same time. HY has been a ratiroad contractor ani a road builder and understands the various systems of road con- struction; has been in the sawmif business, and is at present success fully engaged in farming. He ie acquainted with overy part of King county and knows the needs of each locality. He believes in, and is enthusiastic over, good roads, and wikhes to see the rural districts developed by a system of highways. He says that such a do velopment will benefit the city as well as the surrounding country; that certain products could, with proper access, be reduced in price to the consumer, and, at thé same time give more profit to the farmer. He says that our road® are cost- ing too much and can be built for less money. He believes In the King County Ferry, and says that it can be made to pay a profit to the present rates. He believes that the accounts of King county should be andited, «0 that the taxpayers may know the rea] condition of our finances. Pledges himself that, if elected, he will not use the county com missioner’s office to bufld up a po- lities! machine. He says that he will see that every district of King county gets its share of the road and bridge fund; that one section will not be developed at the ex pense of any other section He invites. the voters to inspect his record for business competency and personal integrity The city of Seattle and all of King county vote on this office on Noys5th.
