Franklin hag only three of last year's men—Fitz, Williams and Dutton—who played star ball for thelr team. Fitz, who played shortstop, will hold his old position this year, without doubt. Fitz is @ claasy little baseball player, and knows the game. Be- fore entering Franklin, he red shortstop and third base for Vashon college, and he pul off some of the closest plays seen on the diamond for the past four years. He also had a fine record in fielding and batting, only striking out twice in two years, and not making an etror. Fits played good bal! for Franklin last year, and would have played much better, only be bad @ little troutite with the coach, and he wouldn't give him uch ?of a chance to the position he liked. Willams, who helped Lefty Mclvor take care of the pitch- or'e box last year, will do the twirling this year, Dave is cer- tainly a smell pitcher, and he bas so much steam that he them jumping all the me. Broadway has tried to kidnap him several times, but Dave stack with Franklin. Williams was the veteran third baseman for Franklin two years -. and the way he used to shoot them over to first kept the first baseman in agony ali the time. Dutton ts also a good player, and is there when It comes to chasing flies, and wil! most likely play first base this year. If we could only have Molvor back again, we would have a * swell team. Oh! why did you play with Dug, Lefty? REAR ARARHRHERARHKAHKRHH Khe ENGLAND NOW SHAKING A FOOT FOR THE NEXT YEAR’S OLYMPIC GAMES |! LONDON, Jan. 13.-—-English sportsmen are still sore over America’s victory at the Olymptc games in London, in 1908, and the governing bodies are making every effort to perfect an Olymple team for Stock- holm in the departments where they were beaten three years ago. “The Athletes’ Advisory club” has been formed to patch up quar- rela between the various governing bodies, find gymnastums, tracks and training quarters, employ coaches and prepare to avenge the defeat in London, “We have to admit,” sald the chairman, “that American athletes have improved in events where they were weak, and we have been left behind. We must search for talent and must bring training methods up to date.” 8, 8, Abrahams, who holfis the Swedish record for the broad jump and is one of mngland's best) all-around athletes, said: “We ought to send to America for trainers, an the Swedes have done. We have been satisfied that we led the world tn sports and have sat still, while other countries forged ahead.” Charles Otway, of Sporting Life, said: “In America the training of amateur athletes begins whe® they are young. The interscholastic rec. ords there equal the varsity records here. We will have to train our boys, or we will never equal the Americans,” While it ts too early to game the principal English entrants, there will be among them, probably, 8 Marathon runner who will extend the fastest long-distance men.
