COMMERCIAL CLUB _ MEMBERS RIGHT Members of the Seattle Commercial Club have refused to consolidate with the Chamber of Commerce unless the police of membership control be maintained in the proposed consoli- dated organization. ‘The Commercial Club is essentially a demo- cratic association. That is, its members have full control. The Chamber of Commerce is just the opposite, It is controlled by a board of trustees, ‘The Commercial Club members, believing that the principle they stand for is of vital importance to the life and the influence of a commercial organization, have agreed to compromise or to surrender practically every other point, but they will block con- solidation before they will wipe out their own organization to help form another devoid of this essential provision. It appears that some of those concerned in thissproposed merger are afraid to trust the members to have a voice and a vote in public matters coming before the organization. Listen to this extract taken from the proceedings of the committee discussing consolidation: “It was then moved by Mr. Maxwell of the Commercial Club, and seconded by Mr. Rhodes of the Commercial Club, that two sets of by-laws, rules and regulations be submitted to all the members of both the Commercial Club and Chamber of Com- merce in lieu of those adopted by this committee, and that the majority vote of all said members be as final.” This motion was lost by a vote of 9 to 4, the members of the Chamber of Commerce and so-called Business Men's Committee voting unanimously against it and the members of the Commer- cial Club committee voting unanimously for it. In view of the attitude taken by consolidation advocates demanding the “trustee plan,” there appears to be nothing for the Commercial Club to do in the matter other than to stand pat and refuse to surrender or compromise on the vital principle at stake. eee CHICO, Cal—Harry Banker has| PORT HURON, Mich.— Four trained a cat to pick apples.
