Piper has formally announced his candidacy for renomination from the 34th sen- torial district. Mr. Piper is one of the best known figures in the political history of the state of Washington, and prob ably knows personally as many, if not more, public men and politicians than any other man in the st He has taken an active intere republican politics during his resi- dence of 21 years in Seattle. To him is due the credit of caus- | ing to be enacted into law the fa- mous “Piper bills,” which provided for an appropriation of $1,000,000 for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific expo- sition. It was Mr. Piper evolved the idea of utilizing the state lands along the shores of Lakes Union and Washington for the pur pose of financing the appropriation In this manner the general fund of the state was not touched. Had it not been for this idea, not more than one-half of this amount would have been realized. In fact, the meas- ures of other members of the legis- lature asked for only one-half of the sum secured by the Piper bills.
