THE STAR Member of the Maked dntty &: tng Co Valted Prens. The rap. Mah~ sine Poindexter and Postof fices Of late days the Anti-Poindexter press for its various rea sons has found abundant fault with the insurgent senatorial can-} didate, and lumns have teemed and reamed with the} w ht of its \ And now, mark you, the cause of all this protesting anguish, all these predictions and maledictions, is the postmaster at Pros ser, his appointment, retention or state of his salary, we do not know which, and neither have we curiosity other than that no} crime was co x contemplated, Our int lies solely im the fa re is overmuch newspaper ado about this} postoffice and its relation to. the senatorial candidates “| A worthy r do tl stmaster at Prosser is and | we have no quart who is he, that his position, | office or job itself so conspicuously on the rep resentatives of this state in the national capitol? Perhaps he well earns his $100 or $125 a month, whatever his stipend may be, and in so doing we accord him due respect, but does this fact make him in any way a senatorial issue; does the fate of the citizens of the state hang in the same balance as Prosser’s postmaster? Is this postmaster an issue comparable to Aldrichism, Cannonism and standpatism? Has he anything to do with the duty on sugar, wool or shoes? Is he a fagtor in the decrease of wages and the increase of living expenses? Does he in any manner throttle the voice of the people while providing vested interests with a megaphone? Certainly not. He is merely a man seeking a job. He needs a salary, like the rest of us, He is nothing more and hardly could he less, except as a cog in a political wheel that may re volve to some politician’s advantage. And as such he is an anachronism politically, a hang-over from a past politic ul age, a fossil from the Aldrich strata, of interest only to future students of political evolution. No, indeed, good sirs of the Anti-Poindexter press; the day} has passed when the people will get politically excited over the appointment of a postmaster or anything that has to do v him. Schedule K of the wool tariff or No. 16 Dutch standard of the sugar, or the howse committee these are the mat ters that the people are politically interested in know why it is so difficult to get their bread and butter, why shoes and clothing are beyond reach ; they want to know who is giving their property to the trusts and syndicates of trusts; they n m rules They want to want to know many things, but of the ‘postmaster at Prosser} they don’t care a canceled postage stamp. So let's have done with postmasters. Let us meet the issue | fairly and squarely. It is Standpatism vs. The People.
