MADAME STEINHEIL PASSING CRISIS OF HER TRIAL TODAY Defiantly, She Whips the Prosecution at Its Own Own Game and Carries the Sympathy With Her. (By United Press.) PARIS, Nov. 6.—Madame Mar- guerite Stetnhell, “the red widow,” whose trial for the murder of her artist-husband and stepmother, Madame Japy, is occupying the at- tention of the world, fs passing through the crisis today. Eighty-seven witnesses, summon- ed by the prosecution, are endeay- oring to prove to the jury that this woman, singlehanded, is respon- sible for the murders, and every accusition being made against her is seized by the court as a further opportunity for bulldozing. Through it all Madame Steinhell is bearing up wonderfully well. She ts being called upon by the bearded prosecutors to explain every trivial | incident that is brought out in the testimony of the witnesses. a is anne it, » 90, in a manner ee that is winning the sympathy of the entire court asccmhlagn: “Se spectators are indignant at he bullying tactics assumed by the prosecutors and frequently a buzs of disaproval sweeps over the audience. Madame Steinhell is. able to sway the spectators at wiil. When Madame weeps, and it is frequently, the spectators weep with her. When she smiles, they smile, too. Even the prosecutors are aghast at times at the manner in which she withstands their sneers and Jeers. They are helpless in their attempt to break down her testi- mony. She won another victory today when Remy Couillard, her hus- band’s valet, testified regarding the finding of the woman lightly bound, indicating that she could have done it helself. Madame’s attorney promptly pro- duced Coulllard’s written state- ment made immediately after the tragedy, showing that he swore that the “red widow” was tightly bound and In a position that she could not possibly have gotten into herself. TAM MEET IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION One woman was inured and two engines badly wrecked in a head- on collision between an inbound Columbia & Puget Sound passen- ger train and an outbound extra Milwaukee road freight a mile and a half below Van Asselt at 7:40 o'clock this morning.
