Take Shot at Bradley. Popular skepticism regarding the Cook has spread until it questions the veracity of John R. Bradley, the New Yorker who financed the Cook expedition. A number of Seattle sportsmen who encountered Bradley in the Stickine river country of British Columbia in 1904 have @ low opinion of him as a sporteman and a doubt as to his status as a patron of sci ence. There is a story rife that | Bradley hired Indians to get him | mountain goat heads and caribou, which he claimed to have killed per sonally. Here the expedi- tion wintered and the Roosevelt was given advantage of the high northern base. He then tella of an February 15, 1909, in a direction to- ward Cape Columbia. Wonderful Journey. From Columbia he makes a won- derful journey north. From there on, although his story is simply a statement of dates, it is very inter esting, and tells of passing the rec- ords of other explorers. Peary speaks much of open water, but does not tell the method of crossing these leads. This interesting in- later. He left Columbia in March and was delayed by open water from the fourth to the eleventh. The time lost at this stage was very valuable to him, as it occurred at the best sledding season. On March 11 he crossed the 84th par- allel. From this it would appear that he succeeded in making al- most 70 miles on two or three *)marching days, only one of which must have been good going. Attempts to Smother. He says there was no clause in the tract providing for a re- bate and that the whole transaction was one that could not be made jpublic without casting reflections: on the honesty of certain men lidentified with the city administra \tion at that time. | Supt. Bouillon says attempts have |been made to smother the whole jaffair and block an Investigation | because an exposure would, he as- | serts, involve “higherups.” The as- sumption of Mr. Bouillon fs that the city employe who was selected to take the rebates pocketed the money, knowing that an investiga- tion by the ones who expected the graft would not be made.
