So it is when she coolly says that Hamilton is nothing to hardly a doubt but that she will hang on to all that his money has bought her. Though there is sometimes strength in persist eas, and when ‘oman of her stamp does care for a man she will sink to the dept nd drink of the very dregs if by doing so she can protect him. ut the question is: Does Florence Moore care for Hamilton the man, or Hamilton the money “Mr, Cynic,” ls loveliest of heart. NIGHTLY FOUND PARADING THE Never in the history of Seattle have conditions in this particular line been as rotten as they are today. Lesg than a month before the opening of the A.-Y.-P. exposition, it is almost irapossible for a man to spend And a respectable woman, without male escort, is subject to insult if she be compelled to be upon the down town streets after It is « condition that must be remedied, but in applying the remedy there should be no room for charges If it were not that Seattle is to be the hostess of guests from all parts of the world during the coming sum- mer, The Star would suggest a grand jury investigation. As it is, there seems to be nothing left but an appeal to the men elected to care for the peace and welfare SHERIFF HOLDS WARRANT FOR GUARDSMAN’S ARREST As soon as Ortis ious former adjutant general of the state of Wash- ington, steps from the governor's office in the state capitol this afternoon he will be arrested on a charge of larceny by embezzlement. Hamilton is accused of forgeries and appropriation of money from the state military fund while hold- ing the office of adjutant general. The greater part of this money was spent on Mrs. Florence Moore, a former denizen of the underworld in Seattle, with whom Hamilton fell in love. Hamilton spent this morning in Governor Hay’s office in conference with the governor, Adjutant General Lamping and Attorney General Bell. On a camp stool at the governor's door Sheriff Gaston of Thurston county is sitting patiently waiting tor Hamilton to come out, when he will arrest him. The war- rant the sheriff holds charges larceny by embezzlement, and is sworn out by As- sistant Attorney General McGill. = Hamilton's shortage, upon which official action will be taken, is $13,000, although there is evidence to show that the total defalcation will possibly reach $60,000, Hamilton's system was a simple one. He pretended to buy cart ridges for guard target practice, but instead spent the money on Mrs. Moore. He drew the money from the state military fund youchers to which he affixed forged signatures of the officers of the arsenals from which he ts sup posed to have bought the care ridges. The governor and state auditor are supposed to act with the ad- jutant general in the purchase of all suppites, but Hamilton was se trusted that these officials took Hamilton's word and signed what- ever requisitions Hamilton asked, without any question. In six months, the records show in Olympla that Hamilton as ad- jutant genera! purchased for one regiment alone, over half a million rounds of ammunition. The arsenal records do not show that any such purchases were made. The price for this was $17,000, most of which, if not all, was lavish- ea upon Mrs. Moore, Heretofore, the ‘arges for ammunition per month averaged about $750, but after Hamilton met Mrs. Moore the se with a bound, ang an ex- am jon of Hamilton's accounts }made it evident that something was wrong. Correspondence with J, W. Benet, major of the ordnance ‘department, stationed at the ar senal at Benicia, Cal. brought to light the fact that out of the 80 purchases of ammunition, but one }was genuine, In his dealing with the Benicia arsenal alo Hamilton got away with over $5,000 by forg- ing Benet's name to vouchers, In MRS, FLORENCE MOORE, February, 1908.
