PRINCETON, N. J., June 24.—Former President Grover Cleve land died at his home here at 6:40 o'clock this morning with Mre. Cleveland at his bedside. Me suffered a relapse yesterday but was thought to have railied last night. The physicians who have steadfastly denied that the case was serious now admit that it was hopeless a month ago. The pa tient fost 150 pounds in the last two months. The announcement of the death was made by Dr. Joseph 0. Bryant by telephone to New York, where it was made public be fore it was known here. The official statement signed by Drs. Bryant, George 8. Lock- wood and J. D. Carnochan says the direct cause of death was: “Heart failure brought on by pulmonary thrombosis and oedema.” | The technical terms used in the statement issued by the j physicians are transisted into ordinary language to mean dropsy of the lungs, caused by a blood clot having formed. The announcement of the death of Cleveland was @ great shock to this quiet little university town, which had been encouraged to believe it's most prominent citizen was progressing well. Since his return to his home here from Lakewood, the reports continually have been favorable though they have been somewhat mysterious, Mrs. Cleveland has been very cheerful and has calied on her friends from time to time. She apparently up to yesterday had no idea that her husband wae near death. . The doctors have come and gone with regularity and ne one about the city caught a glimpse of the former president after he entered his doorway on his return here. j Reports that he was suffering from cancer of the stomach were | constantly denied and it was said that his illness was an affection of the digestive organs, which would not give him much serious trouble, The only explanation of the constant attention of the physicians was that he was a heavy man and at his age any iliness might be serious. The general belief prevails that neither Mrs. Cleveland nor the children were informed by the doctors of the real nature of the disease. The Cleveland children are at the home of the family at Tam. worth, New Hampshire, where they are in the care of their mater. nal grandmother, Mrs. Perrine. The news of the death was not made public until two houre after it had actually occurred, At the time Cleveland was dying the reports from the residence said he was improving. fe and worn by the long vigil of yesterday and last night, and by the months through which she presented the most encouraging appearance, Mrs. Cleveland today is bearing up bravely. She announced that the funeral arrangements have not been made, but that the service probably wil! be held in Princeton, The doctors announced that Cieveland was conscious untli with. in ten minutes of his death. The end was peaceful and was not accompanied by pain. The plans of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland to join their children in New Hampshire were abandoned Sunday, but the physicians say it was mot thought that death was near until late last night.
