In a speech before an audience gathered in the Seattle theatre in the interests of the eandidacy for John PF. Miller EB. C. Hughes dwelt at great length upon the merits of Presi dent Roosevelt, and elicited cheers from his audience when he referred to that official as the greatest president the United Btates had known since Abraham Lincoln And when he had aroused in his auditors a genuine en thusiasm for Roosevelt and his policies, an enthusiasm that} fs always there and but waiting to vent itself, he pointed to} John F. Miller and told all those who listened that only by the nomination and election of Mr Seattle show their loyalty to President Roosevelt Republican party of which he was the leader The eyes of the nation, Mr. Hughes intimated, were upon us and bitter would be the disappointment everywhere if the Miller could the people of and the great publican party should fail to elect its candidate on March ind next And right there it would have been quite pertinent hed gome one risen in his seat to inquire of Mr. Hughes whether the voters of Seattle were more interested in building up the Republican party than in building up their city The Star asks the question now, How about it Mr. Voter? Wherein does your greatest interest lie? In the Republican party, or in your home? If you were called upon to sacrifice the one or the other, which would you sacrifice? Has the Republican party kept the highwaymen off your streets? Has it one the criminals from your city and closed the gambling houses? Has it controlled your saloons and decreased drunkenness? your city cleaner Has it done one single thing to make and better in all respects? If the Republican party is responsible for the improved] moral condition of this city, for your greater peace of mind | and for the fact that you can traverse the streets of Seattle after dark with no danger to limb or pocketbook, then for the man that the Republican party bids you vote for But, if you find that others are responsible for these im proved conditions, then go to the polls and tell the party spell binders that you are first a loyal citizen of Seattle and after- wards, perhaps, a Republican or Democrat If Theodore Roosevelt were in Seattle he wouk! vote for William Hickman for mayor, from the polls. And Theodore Roosevelt is about as ge as can be found anywhere. A majority of the justices have | Said that congress has full power to legislate in this way for employes engaged in interstate commerce All that the court contends is that congress should not attempt, in addition, to in wade the field of purely state regulation. A properly drawn employers’ liability law is now known to be constitutional. The railroads would not even have a chance to make this fight on it again. There would be no trouble at all to draw a good law now. The words of the court have shown the way. La Follette has drawn one ‘one is being fixed up at the white house by the attorney general Now this is one thing that every citizen should keep after his congressmen about. Of course the railroads will fight it— the more so that they know the next law will “stick.” But it fs a law founded in everlasting right. Think of the 10,000 killed and 95,000 injured every year by the interstate carriers, the railroads, by recklessness, and with no compensation to the injured or survivors. And think of the danger this breee is in travel foreverybody. With the roads it is merely a matter of dollars and cents.
