It is a plain statement of fact based on experience But briefly, the sermon of this man, whose prison stripes are badges of bitter experiment in wro foing, is this: Dishonesty does not pay. Don’t think you are smarter than justice. Honesty is good business. Of course all this has been said by the preachers and the moralists over and over again, world without end, But théy talked theory. Here is a man sitting in the somber shadow] of prison walls who talks experience—his experience and the experience of his fellows. They thought dishonesty would pay, They fancied nse, might be caught, not they. They believed the way to get on] in the world was by the way of cute villainy Experience is a dear school. The Mirror man says in some | 4 cases it took three or four terms in the penitentiary for some | of these men to learn the lesson. But it was learned. Their dis-| honesty failed. Because— } It is true as Emerson says, “crime and punishment grow | on the same stem.” | A man may escape the outstretched hands of Justice for a time. But Nemesis will catch up with him. Ca etribution or what you will, a certain something the footsteps of ‘ the wrongdoer and will never let go Slowly, it may be, but surely, it finally overtakes. j In that essay on “Compensation,” Emerson shows how You must pay the price for everything you get in this wo You can’t get something for nothing. The law of all things says: Render your equivalent! You cannot do wrong without suffering wrong That is where so many lose out in their calculations They try to do the impossible—to separate a wr m its penalty. Wrong and penalty are Siamese twins. F 1 sands of years men have tried to divorce the two and fa It simply cannot be done And the pity of it is that men must be shut up in prison that they may learn this simple son, a lesson they once learned at their mother’s knees Learn the lesson and stay outside the walls. The people inside have tried and tried again, and failed BUT ONE COURSE LN) OPEN Whether or not the condemnation of city jail has q arisen from agitation started by the socialists in their war with the police, the city administration is not justified in deal ing with the situation from any standpoint but that of public good.
