AL “VERSUS” LABOR? Capttal versus tadon, or capital and labor? If capital ts the right hand of business, labor ta the left, and ne man is complete with only one hand. Some employers are finding this out. When all have become say “capital versus labor” any more, but only wise, we shall never ‘capital and labor.” es 6:9 &e Jobn H. Patterson, a Dartmouth graduate, has been decorated by France with the Legion of Honor on account of what he bas done for his employes. When he bought a small factory some years ago, he sald: “I shall make my interests the interests of the men and women who work for me. What I can do for them I will, Whatever happiness and satisfaction I can bring Into their lives 1 will bring. 1 ebail unite capital and labor.” He started. In a week they told him he was wrecking Dusiness, but he only laughed. es ee. Read what Patterson has done for the 4,600 men and the 700 Women on his pay roll: He gives them good light to work by, and every 18 minutes changes the alr they breathe. He pays good wages, $3,000,000 a year. He serves lunch (costing him 18 cents) at 15 cents to men and 5 cents to women. He has installed baths, soap and towels He offers cash prites for sug zestions to improve the plant and ite methods. He bas made the neighborhood beautiful with lawns and flowers. He gives the boys seeds, tools and an Instructor, so that they may have their own vegetable garden. He runs a kindergarten and Sunday school, classes in sewing, cooking, dancing and stenograpby, with « reading room and library and paid lecturers. Once a year he invites all his employes and their families to « dinner. Last year he had 10,000 there. Hie creed is: “Your interests are my Interests.” ee eee What ts the result? Patterson's former little $1,200 factory has an Income today of $13,000,000, and he saya: “Every dollar spent in making employes comfortable and contented haa been multiplied tenfold in direct benefit to the company. the Spring—What Is It to You? Sometimes the robin comes weeks ahead of time; sometimes the wild violet ts deceived by a few balmy days; but the small boy and his marbles never falls. That is why we know spring has come, because we behold the small boy on his native soil, aod there, with the eun shining down, books swung over back or tossed aside, he whiles away most de- lightful mornings, letting all consideration of truancy and duty unperformed sail away on the wings of the nds, as boys have done ever since Adam had the first one, “ee eee What ts spring?
