P. Morgan and Senator Foraker: “If you gentlemen are not willing to accept the action of the conservative class, which ix ready to afford protection alike to the rich and the poor, I will say to you now that when you have disposed of ws by your machinations you will find yourselves face to face with a people which believes it has been deprived of its rights and a mob which does not have the least respect for your riches.” These words may not be correctly reported, for every- body present was bound to secrecy. But as to their substance, President Roosevelt himself bas confirmed them in his every public word and official act for the last six years. We need not depend on any impulsive words uttered at a secret meeting to know his attitude. From the moment he became president he has unflinch- ingly fought the special privileges and usurpations through which the equality of political rights secured by the fathers is rendered of no avail by the inequality of property that, hedged in by law, strengthened by monopoly and made per petual through corporations, is wiping out the great middle class and giving us the same woes that for ages have held labor to a condition of unrequited toil in Europe, where one class that produces all enjoys nothing, while another class that produces nothing enjoys all. With firmness equal to his fearlessness, President Roose- velt has grasped hold upon the really vital problems of this nation’s destiny. And everybody knows just where he stands and what he stands for. The ever-increasing load of wrongs which for years the common people have sought to have lightened—and have failed in their lack of concentration and capable leadership— he has absolutely seized and is secking to shift. Other presidents have equivocated and compromised, failing to comprehend or fearing to grasp the one great ques- tion that for three decades has filled the hearts of the Amer- ican people with misgivings and discontent; Roosevelt does not for a moment fear or falter. For him the powerful trusts have no terrors. Within him is the virile spirit of the people and supporting him is the irresistible strength of a nation of freemen, Intensely human, he is capable of error, We may carp at his hastiness in the Brownsville affair, ridicule his matic combat with Mrs, Storer and find many other mi with which to mock him, But these are not Roosevel are only his shadow. The real Roosevelt rises high above individual frailties and virtues; he is far more than a mere personality; he is a tremendous civic force—as a recent magazine writer puts it, “a force for righteousness.” In him are personified the spirit and purpose of ajl the masses. His sympathies are with the burden bearers and are alive _and keen. The confused babble of discontent is being interpreted through his acts into clear speech. The indefinable longings of the millions are being molded into definite purpose. He is the truthful spokesman of the times and of the nation when, with finger warningly raised at Morgan, Rogers and their kind, he declares that justice must and shall be done.
