Commotion reigned in the cabins “It would be hard to imagine the in the cabins Caught like they were and without any opportunity of sav ing themselves it must have been terrible. Air would have lasted several minutes unless the frenzied people broke the I found scene windows of the cabin.” “The Jeanie was then only a short distance away and her boats were soon on the scene picking up those floating on the water. The Jeanie, after standing by until 11 o'clock, returned to Seattle. “The Dix is in about 100 1athoms of water, I do not believe that she was cut to any great extent, if at all, The water rushing in on her port side, tons and tons, would have sunk her, “As to the cause of the accident, I cannot say. I heard my mate signal either one or two whistles just before the . | crash. | “I have been on the sound for 1g years in command of iboats, and this is my first accident.” CAPT, MASON’'S STATEMENT. Captain P. H, Mason, of the Jeanie, made the following statement early this morning: “I left Smith cove shortly be- fore 7 o'clock last night, bound for the smelter at Tacoma, with ore. I approached the Dix off Alki point and signalled her, Suddenly she came astern of me to port. I called to the man in her pilot house and asked him, ‘What he was trying to do,’ | “The man in the pilot house of the Dix put his wheel to starboard and she started directly across my bow. “I signalled my engine room to go astern at full speed. | We could not clear and the crash came, The Jeanie was go- ing astern when we struck. “I manned all of my boats and started the rescue work. After cruising about until 11 o'clock and picking up all those found, I came back to Seattle.” ‘BLAKELEY [3 WRAPPED IN A CLOUD OF GLOOM BY JOE SMITH. PORT BLAKELEY, Nov. 19.—Today has been a day of gloom at Port Blakeley. The mill is closed by order of the officers of the company, business is suspended and the Won fae inquire iat fet ave, P MOG Alem Duliding. =~ 10-11 »| energies of the inhabitants are confined to efforts to console a ea family ee in the little mill town, at least among the older | settlers, which is not bereaved as a result of | accident, The first information regarding the accident reached here by telephone late last evening, and the whole town turned out to seek further information.. From the time the first intimation of the wreck was received the telephone to Seattle was kept busy with inquiries as to who was and who was not on the unfortunate vessel, NO SLEEP LAST NIGHT. In many of the bereaved homes there was no sleep last night, the living waiting through the long hours of darkness in the hope of further information from the missing.. The fact that no bodies were recovered was clutched at in many | instances as ground for the hope that some of those report- ed as missing were not, in fact, on the wrecked steamer, but the confirmation came from one survivor after another this hope vanished and the missing were given up as dead. The first. survivors of the wreck to reach Port Blakeley arrived there on the steamer Florence K. shortly after 2 o'clock in the morning, and they were immediately besieged with anxious inquiries after the fate of the missing.. In but few instances were they able to give the questioners more than faint rays of hope. A tug put out from Port Blakeley at an early hour this morning and spent several hours cruising about in the vicin- ity of the collision in the hope of picking up some of the bodies of the victims, but returned about 10 o'clock without having found any. At noon today no arrangements had been made for serv- ices for the dead, all energies having up to that time been devoted to the work of ascertaising as accurately as might be just who went down with the boat. NEIGHBORHOOD SYMPATHY. Blakeley is one of the oldest mill towns on the sound, and the population of the place is much more fixed and stable than is usual with mill towns.. Many of the mill employes have been employed there for years, living near the mill with their farnilies, and there had grown up an acquaintance and neighborhood sympathy.. Most of the victims of the wreck were well known, and those residents of the place who did not lose immediate relatives mourn the loss of near friends and old acquaintances. In the harbor are several vessels loading cargoes of lum- ber, but all the work of loading them was suspended for the day, and the vessels ran up their flags at half mast. Three of the crew of the Ruth E, Godfrey were Passengers on the Dix when she went down, but all succeeded in making their escape. Among the early lists of the dead was the name of a man said to be an officer of one of the vessels, but this proved later to have been a mistake, the living for the loss of their dear ones.
