THE SEATTLE STAR STAR PUB LisMING pa oe AL SAS IS Sone © wy a wee ys RRL ka ogee Department @unert Mat wet net ta One gent per © Awentytive esate per month Chien Bsa) ut Sybsaripllon sapires We eeleom fe your name te Vanen from "the nd GLEAMING BLADE UPLIFTED ' Thumbs down! No mercy to the fallen Sunset! Thrust in the sharp sword and let the life blood flow! And then throw the corpse to the dogs! In Ancient Rome, when a gladiator had his opponent nd stood in the arena, waiting for the signal of “thumbs from the excited populace before administering the coup de grace, he probably felt a savage thrill of joy akin to that which every Seattle man feels today over the impending doom of the Sunset phone, The creature has been knocked down! Now is the time to drive the sword through its vitals. 4 Heed not the prayers for mercy. down down” If compassion sways you for a moment, when you hear the pleadings of the grovelling victim, think once again of the time when he had YOU by the throat and laughed de- risively at your complaints of poor service! Remember when you called for the meat market and were given a brewery! Forget not when the lying excuse, “Line's busy!" rang in your ears, followed by a jangle of jarring sounds. Remember the oft broken promises to improve and do better! If you let the present opportunity to slay escape you, Mr. Phoner, you deserve henceforth to endure eternal torment from the Sunset. CLEAR THE WATERFRONT the tracks The time is opportune for a movement clear waterfront the which encumber it, and make it what it should be, a safe and convenient place for the water traffic of the city There should be a determined effort made to get all of the railroads to accept a common-user arrangement for a few tracks upon the water front, THESE TRACKS TO BE USED ONLY DURING THE NIGHT, AND TO BE KEPT FREE OF CARS AND ENGINES DURING THE DAY. Three tracks ought to be amply sufficient for the pur- pose of shunting freight cars to and from the various steam- ship wharves. ALL OTHER TRACKS SHOULD BE TORN UP. Passenger cars need not be permitted to move or stand upon these tracks. Every railroad that has use for water-front facilities beyond what are indicated, SHOULD BE COMPELLED TO BUILD A TUNNEL UNDER THE CITY STREE from its depot to some point above the congested water-irent district. Then it could emerge on the Sound without inter- fering in any way with the steamboat freight and passenger business. That a union depot is hardly practicable, all who are familiar with existing conditions will admit. The Harriman system is coming to Seattle and the Seund country with the well-defined purpose of invading “the Hill roads'” territory, For a while, at least until the war between Hill and Harriman is settled, there will be no “community of inter- ests” between the rivals entering Seattle, and a common depot would not be satisfactory to either the Hill or Harriman roads. As for the Milwaukee, which is apparently economical, it might make some sort of terminal deal to enter the Hill depot, but even that is doubtful. At any rate, if Seattle must have three big depots, they will lie quite close to one another, thus reducing to a mini- mum the inconvenience and cost of the exchange of traffic. — It is & soul-satisfying reflection to The Star today when it re alls its first efforts to get rid of the Sunset telephone some years ago. This paper started the first anti-Ganeet crusade and did every thing fm its power to get the Independent into town. And from the day the Independent came, up to the present, The Btaz has stood pat on the proposition that the Sunset deserved to be exterminated.
