Mining today is a science, and what was considered worth- less ore a few days ago is today treated by up-to-date methods and large profits derived from their treatment. The risk of mining is largely decreased from modern meth- ods of treating ores, and Dun and Bradstreet both give it credit for having only 35 per cent of failures, while manufacturing and merchandising have 95 per cent to fail in course of time. Statistics of fifty mining companies in one state, with a com- bined capital of $46,000,000, shows that dividends have been paid amounting to $20,000,000 to the stockholders, who in- vested only $7,000,000, returning to them in dividends over 300 per cent up to date, and the good work still going on. The dividends paid by copper mines alone greater than the total dividends of all the railroads in the country. The dividends paid by gold and silver mines are the total dividends of all the banks in the country, is no tainted money in it.
