Tt presents Mr. Murphy, not as a partisan of any po- litical organization, but 49,00 available man, who, as a city councilman, has pursued a bold, fearless and fnest course and has proved by his acts that he is not a servant of dom- inating corporations in this city. As @ further gecommendation, it can be stated that he GERMANY WILL CHALLENGE THE UNITED STATES ON THE HIGH SEAS” Emperor William Threatens the Monroe Doctrine--« To Have a Great Navy Which Will Completely Outclass the United States Navy When Panama Canal Is Completed---To Colonize South America bg ft the coat of ' t ow t e all t air ovr or ne OR Wel. EAT WY HARKY G. FARMER ox has taken a Geckled stand in favor of a charter amendment allowing the people to acquire the ownership of public utilities, such as gas plants, steam plants, telephone plants, and street car lines, whenever they shall see fit to take over any or all of these things. The Star speaks for Mr. Murphy without any knowl edge on his parethat such a step is contemplated. Ir knows that he has not been, and is not now, a candidate, in any sense of the word. Nevertheless, if the people want Mur phy as mayer, there is no reason why he could not serve. The people will pay scant aviention to party lines at the coming spring election. What they are determined to have is a mayor who will ring true, as Mayor Ballinger has done, but who will go a step further, and will stand for public ownership wf such things as the people want to Own and are determined to own in the near future Murphy would poll a big vote, no matter what party Organization nominated him, and be would poll the vote just the same running as an independent candidate. This isn’t a time for scheming politicians to control the mayorajty situation in Seattle. The people are going to do that, and nothing will be allowed to stand in their way. Theft may be other good men besides Murphy who ‘will be presented seriously to the voters as available can- didates for mayor. The more the better. But up to the present time there has been a remarkablescarcity of available men of the right Sort. Consider Murphy, The Star believes that he will be- come one of the most important factors in the mayoralty race, Apeota!
