Batley Gatwert k fergarten, La ASSAYER RESIGNS F. A. WING, IN CHARGE OF THE LOCAL OFFICE, STEPS ouT—| GIVES REASONS Last night the resignation of Frederick A. Wing, assayer in charge of the local assay office, was placed In the hands of Director Roberts, of the United States mint esignation Wiag * to the diseov wy of Adams niations he had intended resigning his office, and had spoken to Senator Piles about the matter, signifying his willing- ness to retire as soon as Senator | Piles would secure the appointment of another assayer to take his place. Clears His Skirts, When the Adams exposure came out, however, Wing states, he felt that it would be an injustice to him- self and to his office to leave until! after the whole matter was cleared up. Hence he did not retire until Director Roberts yesterday <dle- clared that every cent of the miss- ing money had been traced to Adams, and that every other person ‘Was exonerated Wing also has a word of rebuke for the press, which he says gave undue publicity to the unfortunate condition of affairs, and probably greatly damaged the confidence of the public in Seattle as a city, and $m Seattle's assay office. Director Roberts gives out Statement corroborating Wing's @tatement in regard to his retire- ment, and exonerating Wing in ev- ery particular from any suspicion or responsibility for the crime com- mitted under his management. Only One Change. The only change in the assay of- personne! so far announced is the appointment of L. 8. Kerfoot, of the San Francisco mint, to the office of cashier, left vacant by Adams. Kerfoot was one of the men first placed on the work of} investigation by the government. Director Roberts and Frank E Leach will remain in Seattle a few days, after which Roberts will go to Washington and lay the result Of his investigation before Presi- dent Roosevelt, whose decision will @ecide the appointment of a suc cessor to Wing.
