To Avert the Strike ‘Two of the greatest forces in the United States are lining up for a deadly contest, for a test of power, for supremacy. Tt is a kind of contest with which the country is all too familiar, Many times have such contests brought idleness, disorder, rioting, death and devastation upon vast communities and half-paralyzed the Dusiness interests of the entire land. And must the nation stand quietly aside, with folded hands, and tolerate it? Has not the public a right to peace? Are the coal miners and the coal operators the only business @lements in ae country which have rights to assert, and is paralysis of their own business and derangement of business in general the only methods of asserting them? After the last great coal strike had been waged for many dark months, after the militia had long been in the field, and after the sky bad been lit with flame and the h dyed with blood, after all the Rameless disaster and demoralization entailed, President Roosevelt @emanded and secured arbitration, just agreement and peace. Must the nation again be sickened by another horrible spectacle of starvation and bloodshed before asserting its right to peace and order? Is not the old lesson still fresh enough {n mind? All the sad experience in strikes has taught only that the one remedy sure and just is arbitration. Why delay {ts application until the contending forces have worn themselves out and exhausted public patience? The time to kill a snake is not after it has sunk its fangs into your flesh, but when it first appears in sight. The same power by which President Roosevelt demanded arbi- tration after months of rioting and disorder enables him again to de- mand it before a shot or a tool laid down. The rights and interests of 30,000,000 of people require that the difference of the miners and operators be settled in peace.
