Owing to the fact that the water wound its way down the ditch now being dug by the con- tractor, the leak was not noticed | until the men went to work Tuesday morning. The accident happened, Cunning- ham claims, through some heavy substance falling on the water pipes. | The pipes are manufactured of clay jand are not capable of withstanding any great strain Street Superintendent Walters stated Tuesday morning that the pipes simply broke in two from the weight of the earth on top of them and hints that the accident might not bave happened had care beem taken to | some support under the main Cunningham, the contractor im charge of the work, now says that the James street sewer has in some manner become clogged, and it i that phase of the difficulty which is proving the hardest to solve The blocking up of James street sewer will aleo block the Yesler way sewer unless something in ac- complished pretty soon. The course taken by the water from the James street sewer after leaving the pipes at the corner of James and Third, lies through the soft sand and loam in the ditch to the Jefferson street main. Down Jefferson the water rushed to Yea- ler w and carried with it small sticks, stones and quantities of sand. This sand on reaching the level places piled up until finally it blocks the sewer and causes an overflow in some other location. RR HOT AIR" FOR JOHN D. SLAND, ©.
