A struggle of minds! ‘That is what the management of a well known vaudeville house in Se~ attle tried to pull off the other day when F. W. Tatum, a “mind reader,” starring at the house, sent a chal- lenge to P, H. MeKwen, who re- cently appeared at the Seattle the- ater in mystic feats. Tatum sent McEwen a rather per- sonal challenge, and also distributed circulars of the same throughout the city. Of course, it was goo dadvertising, and on the day that Tatum gener~ ously set for the great combat of mind reading and thought telepathy (which was, according to his idea, to be pulled off in his own baliwick) a great crowd gathered at his thea- ter to see the fun. But— Tatum bargained without his host. McEwen's manager happens to be H. L. Leavitt, an old-time show who knows anything and every sbout the profession, from advance for a one-ring circus to starring @ $10,000 a month operatic Patt. Leavitt also bas an inexhaustible fund of humor, and Saturday after- noon he sat himself down with pen in hand and sent Tatum the follow. ing rather droll reply “F. W. Tatum, Esq, Star Theater, Seattle. ‘Dear Sir: A dodger over your name has been called to my atten- tion. in this dodger, as well as a letter addressed to Mr. McEwen personal . you insert what is purported to be a challenge of mind reading tests, and “challenge” him to appear at the Star theater, in which you are ap- pearing, on a certain date, and say | you will gladly hand over to him the sum of $100 If he succeeds in do- ing six things which you shall pro- pone. “I desire to state to you that your magnanimous offer does not bear the earmarks of a man possessed of either the dignity of the profession Mr. McEwen is a member of, nor does it appear to contain enough reason to require an answer. “Nor would I write this letter to you were it not to sugest to you that in promiscuously circulating cheap dodgers about the streets to which Mr. McEwen's name is a’ tached, you are taking what I con- sider to be a liberty not altogether within (he province of a legitimate Professional, whether he profess to be a mind reader or simply a con- Juror, “That Mr, McEwen should consent to appear the theater in which you are hired to act, and thereby help to swell the receipts of your genial and well meaning manager, is & propostion not only ridiculous, but impudent. “That he should consent to allow his name to become connected with & pyrotechnically-advertised battle of mentality, heralded to the public 4 la Barnum & Batley, is a proposi- tion that even a gentleman with yeur mind-reading propensities should realize is absurd. “I presume that in writing this letter I am not doing credit to your much-heralded faculty of mind reading, One glimpse into my thoughts would convince you that your thirst for publicity will not be aided by ua, “T would eeest that you use this wonderful mind-reading power o fyours on receipt of this letter, Simply establish telepathic com- munication with me, and I will be glad to tell you just how seriously, we take your challenge and the origin of the same, Yours truly, “H. 1, LEAVITT, Manager.” Upon receipt of which Mr. Tatum Will probably say mean things via the mental telegraphy route to Messrs. Leavitt and Mckwen, ‘
