Tn President Roosevelt's great speech at Harvard there ts no Sreater truth than this, This single paragraph is a great apeooh in u The country is cursed with legal lawlessness conducted on a gt Bantic scale. Many of the biggest ships of financial and commercial enterprise @re boldly and sa red through forbidden seas by skillful legal Pilots who know the statutory rocks and shoals. Like pirate craft of old, these big financial and comme @isguise themsetves as honest merchantmen and take their vi ly ste ships ma un- awares. The pilot of a pirate ship was always an important figure, com- manding a large share of the loot. The legal pirates of the big Arusts of today get $50,000, $75,000 and sometimes $100,000 a year. Piracy still pays the pilot well. There is @ common idea that the lawyer who commands $50,000 @F more a year from a single trust client must be an exceptionally Great lawyer, This ts a delusion, The old pirate pit ter than any other pilot. Measured against the legal incompotents and weaklings whom the Public commonly selects to enforce the laws, the trust lawyers seem Sreat. But that is through fault of the public, Setting up a $15,000-a-year public prosecutor against a $50,000-a- Year lawyer of a trust is like setiing a rowboat to catch a piratical craft propelled by steam and sail Tt need not be a particularly staunch pirate ship nor have a very igh class pilot to escape such feeble pursuit The vast bulk of the finances of the country are controlled by institutions that, like the Equitable, sail dangero the focks of forbidden seas. A footing of distrust is steadily growing throughout the country, Respect for law thus evaded with impunity is giving place in the pop- ular mind to a spirit of dumb anger against all the laws. Born of the spirit of this great lecture there has recently been organized a society for the purpose of perpetuating Dr. Willet’s sun shine creed. It is known as the International Sunshine society, and Mrs. Cyn- thia Westover Alden is the founder and president general. It bids fair to merge into itself all the societies of a similar nature, such as the “Don't Worry clubs,” ete. State organizations are being effected and the society is rapidly growing. The motive of the moverment is thus stated by Mra. Alden: “The purpose of the Sunshine society is to encourage cheerful- fess, individually and collectively; to scatter the sunshine of love; to do something each day to lighten somebody's burden; to do Kindly deeds; to say kind things; to be cheerful and iook for the good in life; to incite one another to the performance of kind and helpful deeds, and to thus bring the sunshine of happiness into as many hearts and homes as possible.” All of which is Christianity boiled down to its essence—good cheer and kindly service done for the joy of the doing. than a mere singing of “There's sunshine in my soul today.” It is not a mere selfish enjoyment of sentiment or the enthust asm of a fevid emotion. It is the joy of service. It is the work of ameilorism. Hail to the Sunshine societies. Let us all join one, dean o' It ts more _—— Ida M. Tarbell says John D.
