And Wickes ie “Jarvis.” ‘The exposure resulting from Wickes’ arrest on the charge of blackma!l hag caused a sensation tn New York, especially among mem- bers of the Bar association. J., with per- jury, most of the “Jarvis” letters that have thus far come to light have been of an innocent character written for the sole purpose of boost- ing Thomas F. Wickes one of the ablest men of the New York bar. ‘The apparent uselessness of a great many of these letters has led to the belief of many that Wickes is sub- ject to mania, In the Weston letters “Jarvis™ urged that gentleman to settle a suit for damages which had been brought against him by Dr. A. P. Grinnell, a highly respectable resident of Ver- mont, Asa result of mistaken iden- tity Weston had caused the arrest of Dr. Grinnell, The latter secured a | judgment for $12,500 and another for $10,000 against Weston, Then there was a mistrial, and, a few weeks ago, a fourth hearing of the case. Wickes was one of Grinnell's lawyers. While the case was pend- ing in court Weston was deluged with letters from “Jarvis” advising him to pay and not prolong the litt- gation. Wickes used to be in partnership with Edward & Hatch, an attorney, ‘They disagreed, the partnership wa; dinsolved, and at once Hatch was in receipt of his share of “Jarvis” let- ters telling whata fine man Thoma@ P. Wickes was end how Hatch would regret the dissolution. In another case Wickes was at- torney for # young woman in @ damage sult. He was successful and she received judgment for a large sum. Then she learned of “Jarvis,” but thin time it was Wickes that was boosting “Jarvis.” He told her that he would have been unable te win such a victory for her bad it not been for the unexampled genius and ability of one Lewis Jarvis, without whose advice her case would have been practically hope- lees. He suggested that hin client should amply reward “Jarvie” for what he had done for her, and she very graciously 414 so—through Wickes. It would take Wickes perhaps 3 to 40 minutes to reach his office from his home, Yet it was gener- ally his custom to leave his home at 7 o'clock in the morning, while he would not arrive at his office un- til several hours jater. Where was he in the meantime? is the question that is being asked, and on its answer very likely de- pends much of this Jekyll and Hyde mystery. Wickes, with his short trimmed imperial, and @ military swing of the shoulders, is an = im personage. His manner is some- what imperious, but always suave He in trying his best to keep clear of the interviewers, and to all such callers at his office he is “out.” He happened to bob in from an inner office when one reporter called and he could not escape. He tried to sidestep, but was cornered and finally said that his hot shot would come later, Wickes is proud of his ancestry, for, in a prepared statement for publication of his biography, along with other “notable men of New York,” the first paragraph tells all about Wickes’ grandfather, Elipha- let Wickes, and his revolutionary experience.
