Three huge dredgers are to be put to work, one of them being brought here from San Francieco. The sluleing of the Jackson street hill into the Great Northern ter minal grounds will begin as soon a the property owners and the elty a6 ficials agree to start the big project Artangements between the water way company and the Great North ern have been consummated Will H. Parry returned Monday from New York with the announce ment that he had completed ar rangements for disposing of th company's certificates, all financial obstacles bein rome. It hax been reported that the company intends to resume the ex cavaiion of the south ¢ but Mr Parry is authority for the at nt that no such plan is contem ov can do for a few years at least to dredge the waterways and cut down Jackson street About a mile of the east water way, which is 1,000 feet wide and 32 feet deep, has already been dredged out. As soon as it is en tirely cleared, the west waterway which is the same size, and the canal and Duwamish river water ways will be dredged Mo: rand King streets and vening property. Mr. Parry states positively that property own ers will not be charged more than 5 cents per yard for the removal of dirt, whereas under ordinary con ditions dirt canot be removed for less than 26 or 40 cents per yard In pursuance with the contract which the waterway company has with the state all tideland owners must pay 15 cents or leas per yard to the company for filling the ground, The Great Northern & subject to this state provision, but just how much it will pay the) waterway company for the dirt has not yet been made public, City of ficlale will probably want to ascer- tain thie fact, however, before the allow the work to proceed. If the Great Northern gets its dirt too cheaply, it simply means that the | Jackson street property owners witt| © to pay for the waterway com pany's generosity to the railroad, About all that now holds up the initiation of the Jackson street ork is the Third and Fourth ay- ue regrades. The city officials propose to dump the Third and Fourth avenue dirt where it is in- tended to dump the Jackson street Lill, and the Jackson street owners are strenuously protesting. A COMPARISON Mr. Albert M. Bigelow, of New York, writes in regard to a trip from New York to the Lake & perior mining region as follows “I was absent from my office in New York Friday, Saturda; and Monday. I had one day in Chicago, two days and a night at Lake Su- pertor, and did not need to break the Sabbath by any business trans- action. This was accomplished in this way. I took the Lake Shore Limited for Chicago on Thursday evening, leaving at 5:30 o'clock. I arrived in Chicago at 4 o'clock on Friday. 1! stayed in Chicago four and one-half hours, meeting some people there and accomplishing ome business. I took the train at 8:30 and arrived at Lake Superior | 1% ‘lat 6:50 in the morning. I had ali | jay and the evening there spent Saturday night there and Sunday. Sunday evening at 6:50 1 left Lake Superior and arrived Chicago on Monday morning at 6 o'clock 1 had a half-day there and left at 12.30 p. m. on the Twentieth Century Limited on the Lake Shore road for New York, arriving at 9:30 Tuesday morning, which en abled me to reach my office at the ordinary time. “On each of the trains which I took I had a comfortable room for myself and was luxuriously supplied in dining cars on each road. This more than verified the story In the Arabian Nights of the wonderful Persian carpet on which the Prince was transferred some one hundred miles in a single night.” Mr. Bigelow adds that the above is in striking contrast to his first trip to the Lake Superior region in 1859, when it occupied seven or eight days of constant traveling in going one way. GAMES MUST bE IN OPEN AFTER ?HIS Chief of Police Bennett, of Bal- jard, has iseved orders to all saloon: of that city that card playing wil! not be allowed fn rooms or even behind curtains or screens. The chief says he does not care whether the games are for “fun or marbles,” they have to be out 'n the open.
