Mayor Ballinger, alone, stands betwoen of Mquor at Madl god representatives of the people the people and the he al to throw open the one gate that bas heretofore withstood every as sault by the forces of vice and Iniquliy Ballin ake or break himself as a public official ot Mayor er will by his action fn this matter. If he so wills, he may, by exercise his veto power, end once and for all, attempts on the part of the saloon element to gain a foothold in the parks and residence dis tricta of the city Bim. THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND FOR MAYOR BALLINGER 70 TAKE. HE MUST BE FE FOR THE PROF OR AGAINST THEM the district in which it ls at present confined, or it will ultimately be licensed in every corner The Star deplores the fact that up to the date of this writing It he does not do so, the odlum will rest upon THER The sale of liquor must either be restricted to grocery within the elty limits. Mayor Ballinger has taken no decisive position with reference to the proposed Meensing of a beer garen at Madison, and Chief of Police Delaney haa seen fit to give the plan bis qualified approval. DO THE MAYOR AND HIS POLICE CHIEF MEAN TO CON- FESS THEIR INABILITY TO COPR WITH AN EVIL that at the Present time can easily be suppressed, or have they been won over to the side of the lawbreakers, who have for years maintained “bling piga” at the lake shore resorts legalizing of their nefarious trade? Ww sbout-face on the part of the city administration. @ebdauchery were too long tolerated at the lake side parks by the Fecent Humes administration to make Iicensed saloons at Dreathing places acceptable to the general public. Mayor Ballinger was elected with the distinct understanding that md worked without ceasing for the wer the cause may be, the people demand an immediate Drunkensess aud he would give Seattle a clean administration. So far, he has done so. It ts up to him to continue to hew to the same line. Will he do so? THE BOY AND THE FOURTH Johnson has undertaken that heretofore impossible task of curbing the Fourth of July spirit of the small boy. Either Mr. Jobuson is an extremely optimistic man or else he @oesn't know what he is going up against. Men may be coerced or persuaded, women may intimidate or wheedle, but the small boy is not susceptible to any official influ- ence whatever. ' Young America may know little of history, and care less, but he is aware that the Fourth of July is a day set apart, sacred to the celeberation of liberty, and he makes sure that none of his lb- erty gets away. While the parents exalt their born, in more senses than one, and declare one to another, with much vociferation, that we are the bravest, smartest and most prosperous people on the face of the earth, their male offspring of tender age, armed with cannon, crackers and revolvers, make the day hideous, and in their pa- triotic excitement blow out thelr dear eyes, burn off their sweet Roses and in many instances climb the golden stair in a very hasty and disconcerting manner. And unfortunately many other conseqtences occur beyond the Tange of youthful exuberance. Frightened horses dash off to de Struction, women in holiday attire find themselves in flames and no fire escape avaliable, Cittes have been burned and millions in prop- erty destroyed, all for the gratification In a barbarous way of young America. Attempts at mitigation of the nulsance are generally met with contempt or opposition from the parents themselves, who think it is well to have patriotism developed in their children. But why should p striotism take such a wild form as cannon ¢rackers and revolvers? : ‘Why set the day apart as one devoted to a general breaking of window panes? Let Councilman Johnson ask for a law that will Sllow every kid in the land to f{llustrate his nolsy patriotiem on the glorious Fourth by smashing with bricks all the windows in sight This would be less dangerous, leas expensive and less offensive in every way than the powder and. dynamite demonstrations and quite as much to the point. Johnson and the other city dads may be able to confine the sale of explosives to the smaller and less dan Gerous crackers. This would be effective. But it may as well be understood right now that no mere res- Olations, however ominous they may be made to appear with statis- Mes of lockjaw and lacerations, will scare the small boy even @ lit- tle. He will buy the biggest noise and the deadliest disasters that Bre offered for sale. vy Are You Going Blind ? ie.
