This map shows, to a cer tain extent, what A MARVELOUS GAME the Japanese played in the first big battle and here one of the great- est battles of the Chino-Japanese war of 186 was fought On the esat side of the Yalu river the Japanese hat nearly 100,000 men, but only about 60,000 were | used inthe fight, the rest being kept for reserves. The ehstern jbank of the Yalu is low and the country back of {t is quite level At Wiju the river is about three —— wide. The west bank of the | river is —|adout sixty feet high and back of | it there rise four great hills, Two Jot these are above the junction of the Ito rivér and the Yalu. One is Tiger hill and back of it and higher than it is Yulchawan. Below the Ito are the two hills or heights called Makau aod Yushukau these hills the Russians had been at work for nearly three months | and bad constructed (or should have constru@ed) elaborate | ments. On the Makau and Yushu- | kau heights wete planted forty guns }and there were about 10,000 Rus- j Slang to defend the position. They were upon THE FOUR HILLS; In the ol4 Chinese walled city of Kiulien, at Antung, and opposite | Sukuchin, where the Yalu is easily }fordable. Besides this there were p patteries upon the tyo hills below Antung, namely Antsechang and Niangniangebin and a base and for- tified camp had been established at Hohmu-tang, where the reserves | were strongly entrenched. | A large force of Cossacks kept all | | the river positions in touch with each other and, in all, the Russian | line extended 27 miles, from Suku- |chin to Niangniangehin. The Yalu | river is full of islands and three of | these were occupied by strongly en- jtrenched Russian outposts, who | were im turn covered by the guns on | the heights and the riflemen on the | shore. In all, then, the Russians held jtwo fortified cities, six fortified hills and three isiands. On the other islands were posted small scquads of sharpshooters Gen. Kuroki, the Japanese com- imander, had BESIDES HIS ARMY, A flotilla of torpedo b« boat destroyers and armed launches and the navy had sent him in some | of the big guns from the ships which |lay off the mouth of the river. With true Japanese patience and | painstaking detail the plan of at | tack was worked out and it seems | to have worked like a clock: ‘The Japanese forces were kept } under cover, so that each move was hidden from the enemy until it wai actually made. On Wednesday, April 27, the Jap | anese artillery opened fire on Kia lien at daybreak and the struggle was on. Simultaneously a detach | ment of Imperial Guards and the | Second division dashed into the | river and waded, waist-deep, to the islands respectively of Kulido and Keumchangdo. ‘The Second went on to the island of Cheunsongdo and | almost before the Russian outposts warmed up to the fight they were | swept off the islands and the little men had thelr trenches. The |Guards found themselves in easy | range of the Tiger hill entrench- | ments and so they lay down phind | the earthworks they had just taken and began a SLOW, DEADLY FIRE, alternated with terrific volleys. The Jap artillery also centered its —.\o on Tiger hill. The result was @ slaughter and after some hours the Russians fell back fo the posi tion on the next height, Yulehawon It seemed incredible Russians should have given up Upen | entrench-| ts, torpedo} that the| fire The Russians seemed to take no initiative t to await the next move came at but were conte of the dawn on t nemy. ‘Th two companies of Imperial Gua slipped across by boats that had been darknes: brought up tn the pied the Russian trenche: hill, Here they found ily fire of on Tiger proof of thetr ¢ the day before and ample A QUICK RUSH Put them in possession, after a hot 10-minute struggle, of the Russian position on, Yulehawon, The Japanese now had a bit ef river that was secure from rifle fire and reasonably sheltered fre Russian artillery, and wo! rushed all day on bridges across the river between the base of Tiger hill and Kulido island, so that big bod ies of troops, together with artillery could be brought across the river. ‘The Russians improved their time by strengthening their entrench ments on the Makau and Yushikan }highlands (something that should |have been dome six weeks before.) The Japanese were up with th sun on the 29th and while th bridge buiders continued their work the Twelfth division opened up on the Russian forces opposite Suku chin. Guns had been moved down in the night by the Japanese and they soon made the Russian trench jes too hot to live in and again the back. It is hard to Russians fell d why the Russians gave up one after another of these vital positions, except that each move the Japanese was only taken to be & feiut and the RUSSIANS DARED NOT centrate to oppose it for fear of leaving unprotected some point where the main attack was expect ed. Whatever the Russian theory was the Japanese went on taking place after place and gradually Ughtentng their grip on the Russian bank of the river. It was evident that if the Japa nese croseed the river at Sukuchia they would be able to direct a strong flank movement against Kiulien, but im spite of this they took no desperate or even heroic measures to stop the enemy, who were soan working like beavers throwing an. other bridge across the river at Su- kuchin. The Guards kept on with their bridge bullding at the foot of Tiger hill and the Second division. which had crossed to the island lay quiet all day, merely holding the Russians in check and keeping them from withdrawing any forces to help their comrades up the river. The big and little guns of the Jap- anese posted on the Korean (east) side of the river, kept BANGING STEADILY AWAY At the principal positions of the en |emy and it was on this day that the Japanese flotilla of little boats got in its fine work. They ran as far up the river as Niangniangehin and with their idfire guns they im partially peppered batterte en- | trenched infantry and cavalry. At time a most unique struggle one was waged between a torpedo boat land a squadron of Cassack cavalry Outside in t Japanese t was burning lot of coa sending up clouds of smoke and the Russiansp robably dared not with |draw their men from their right wing to strengthen their left and center, because they felt sure that the flotilla was covering the land ing of « big body of Japanese troops who would soon attack the right | wing. Things were warming up and as Kuroki dey i his game bh HAD THE RUSSIA At four places and all the down the line for 27 miles. The Twelfth division had finished their bridge in the night a began crossing at 3 a. m from Sukuchin. This division is known in Japan as the Sampo Sh dan because of its abundant equip. ment of mountain artillery (sampo) That was doubtless the reason for its selection by Gen. Kuroki for a flanking movement, since, after crossing—an operation which might have been rendered terribly pert }lous did the Russians show any of. fensive initiattve—the division had to move westward thtough the hills lon the east of the [ho river, and to take up a position within easy reach jot that This occupted th Twelfth untfl 6 o'clock in the eve ning. apite the fact that the Rus ians’ did not oppose them, but let them occupy a position as the map shows, THEIR C river calmly which THREATENED And left, as well as their base and TER | MAY 30, 1904 5 | webct sl TWO BLIND ROCK-DRILLERS | i ne aa VIE FOR HONORS IN BUTTE ITS A RARE OCCASION whilo the Japanene DUCEMENTS, AND tOW WILL, BE NO EXCEPTION the flotilla made Rome howl, com TO, THE RULE, 8 i «@ ing up a8 far as Antsoshan and try Tapestry Port 4 yards long, 44 inches wide, in a choice eollee- j ing to make the Russians expect a Uon of Turki#h and Oriental patterns and colorings, also the new : landing party at Antung, 7 yy plat lors, 4 red, Hava own, olive green, ete.; about ; to the destruction the Impe al 10 pairs t th th from 6. ” to $6.00 $3. 98 arched ac and ove r pair ¥ he hts of Tiger hill and y he Guarda were rein f haere agi mine’ gel prin $6, 30 and $7. 00 Portieres Tomorrow $4. 98 i ’ an nday morning dawned « # i ” 4 f ne nd #7. 0" pestry Por- Ge Kuroki had w ked his game tere ” mM wrrow for #4 uny colors, some all one out and was’ ready for a grand « , n ral combined colors 2 G4 98 The Twelfth was on the hills, ted fringe at, per pair ° wondy t flank; the Second nd the | earon wise oo Pie OL ee “Creating a Stir P DI ne, one adva on Kiulen Ar & « housekee pers these lace curtains we and the other to go op under shel I i] ¢ ’ t wt jow for samples ter of Yalu bank to ack An convinced that they are more than tung and threaten to t it off from the base at H flotilla was to hutang, while the KO cle p to At Sale of Ladies’ Dress Skirts Goes Merrily On tung and shell everything tn sight #0 as to keep the Russian right tly mpent inspecting our new line wing busy kirt ¥ ful dress skirt sale of two weeks Kuroki was taking Kot npted us t npt another one of even more inter- «t na, ‘Th jot « , * the new weaves and A DESPERATE CHANCE, t! made skirts, at $10.00, $8.00, $7.00, $6.00, $5.00, $4.00, $3.00 AND $2.00 ' in case his men were route nd drive back n tt terrible disaster would result | Waiting f ene New Wash Goods | Scotch Lawns 3 I-2c norning, the Twelfth started to In one day arid oft the next ts | A little lot of ten pleces nice mareh toward the [ho and the R th t 1 gard to new | Scotch Lawns will be offered ane seemed to feel that fat These pretty upon the altar of low prices, last they vod the Japan Whit fercerized Oxford | ‘This wee price of 3%e a yard game and that his was to be the w ne a not t with ought to clean up every Inch real attack Twelfth came Ta 4 y 1 thes are of this fabric tomorrow; re- eadily on, bringing their field just wh un ure look member Bue pieces, which had been taken apart, ing for me in 6 to 10 yar and strapped to the backs of horses lengths; the yard 15¢ Looking te The division spread « front o| i i fact Salles lone sad toe then op te Batiste and Dimity 20¢ | Dimity Bargains firing line we On | We add to the good things In | Sere is one you will not be dis- ‘ r Enterprise A tlon, | led quickly, ‘The best the wash goods section tomor appointed in —Dimities that Tr Mont Ma The| “ ‘ w another lot of 29 will look just the same after thetr negligent * Mutte every sensor N t cont y b Fathet 1 Di washing as they do now in the, Id have prevented tent It re Jepth of 9% Inche 10 4 | wil e | plece—come in attractive pat- t hrough the rough ee eee . jon Sey widen oe | Snowflake Suiting 25¢ . sound a afm Altheosh broke f ndle, which | schooling m which the Butte 4 Sent & sceet ean Cotton Voile 1S¢ owflake Suiting mobility of the Cossack ae aie ; th - " a ee A new fat very fashionable | A very popular cotton fabrie, have told strongly for such often hrough it at t h k ' Maid: Rock, f t#, also > prett; nd strong, in colors uon parently th ean u minute, Butt ‘ Bute ‘ t pr for hildrer . | blue gray and black, cov- ae an — t t xpert drillers both I i on, working under his dire bi gray and tan: a | ered with little white tufts; C ACKS DID LITTLE ot Mane fe thietah pen | 15e | exceptional value 250 Or nothing.
