Tt is, indeed, good cause for indignation and disgust, The Meth odists are by no means alone in having cause for protests, Much of nd in e imposed itself upon the public ts the worst doggere! that ¢ hymn books. It ti no new condition. ‘Will continue to be so for a long time ‘A year or so ago there was wide discussion of somebody's tion that Cardinal Newman could not have known his own ‘when he wrote “L Kindly Light ‘The at Dut, however that may be, it ts certain that Teal meaning, and less real music. Of course, the Almighty judges the spirit of the sin ‘words of the sqng. But who can show the hardihood to say epirit can be right when the song ts silly? How many people give heed to the meaning tn hymns, anyway? From the number of hymns in vogue that have no meaning at all, 9 must be judged that very few do. With most, the hymn must de but Jung-deep. We lustity shout rhythmed nothings that, if we stopped to fealize how barren of sincere sentiment they are, we would not utter even in a whisper. And then, too often, to an inane jingle—or jangle—of words we at- Tach a dance tune and rattle it off with fine gusto. It. must startle the angels that lean and listen, @evite that dance and leap and laugh. ‘That dance music which appeals only to the bodily senses, can Bave no rightful place in sacred services, goes without saying. ‘There is a time to dance, Dut that time is not when we are seeking westful repose of body, that the sou! may steal forth for divine com- maunion. But we have dance music tn the churches and Sundays schools just the same. Usually tt is no more out of congruity with the occasion than are the words that go with It. It is far worse than merely unwise; it is sacrilege unspeakable. The dear old hymns with God in them, that have sung themselves {nto the minds and souls of generation after generation—are they not good enough’ Must we continue to put them aside for these now-faghioned ditties that have neither sense nor music? ‘There are plenty of sacred hymna, almost divine in their expression Of religious feeling and irresistible in their uplifting force, and these we cannot know too well or sing too often, Surely Christian people in all denominations will join with ‘Methodists in the crusade against frivilous hymns. _ VIRTUE IN TEMPTATION ‘Temptation, like adversity, has its uses. Either it strengthens us ‘when we resist it, or else, when we yield to it, it serves to thrust us backward to our proper place in the moral classification. Man would never have discovered that he has a stomach had it always perfectly performed its function without pain. He could never there is any such noble quality as courage had it never ‘We cannot comprehend health except through dixease. ‘we without temptation know and appreciate the great that make up the power of resistance and feel the increment and self-respect that comes with it. We may judge his energies when they are directed in action, but we cannot me asure the immense expenditure of power in simple resistance. ‘The cannon that does not burst, the pisten-rod that neither bends nor breaks, perform their active offices because of their unseen but potent energy of resistance. i To stand against a secret temptation may take more force than to face an open foe, and may develop more power. ‘The will ia the man, and our moral character is the sum of our moral choices, Mr. Van Alen, of Newport, who declared England ts the only fit place for a gentleman, need give no further explanation of his presence 4m this country.
